The village of Menomonee Falls offers plenty of entertainment and housing for different ways of life without the noise or traffic of a large city. "The best thing about Menomonee Falls is that it's grown so much in recent years," says Jacqueline Rammer, library director of the Menomonee Falls Public Library who lives in the village. "We have everything everyone could ever want, like shopping, dining and new houses, but it's still close-knit." Now 40,000 people strong, the village holds onto that sense of community through an eventful calendar in a small but colorful downtown shopping and dining district. With reinvestment projects and high-performing schools, the state's most populous village continues attracting new residents while keeping longtime locals around.
According to the village website, 32% of residents work in Menomonee Falls, with Kohl's headquarters, Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital, Briggs & Stratton and Harley Davidson among the top employers. The local school district is a large employer, as are a few small manufacturing plants. Incoming projects, including business centers, warehouses, mixed-use apartment complexes and housing developments, will boost the economy and increase the village's existing 19,000 jobs.

Artistic spirit shines at festivals and in the library
The village has parks with varying amenities and more than 30 miles of trails for residents to walk, bike and roller skate on. Golfers can enjoy three courses in the village and a few more just outside its boundaries. The Menomonee River Parkway traverses two miles beside the river and stops through many of the village's 16 parks. Village Park just underwent a major renovation in 2020, partially with donated funds from local businesses. In addition to new tennis and pickleball courts, the park has a splash pad donated by Kohl's corporate headquarters in town. Village Park is where many community events take place, like movie nights, Lavender Fest and the Downtown Beer Garden.
Each summer, the Falls Festival of the Arts is held downtown between Mill Pond Park and Lime Kiln Park. The festival celebrates local artisans by allowing them to share their art and performances before a large crowd. In the days leading up to the event, artists compete in chalk art, sculpturing and plein air painting.
Locals catch a film at Marcos Menomonee Falls Cinema, play a round at Village Bowl & Social, or utilize the public library's best features to keep having fun when the weather gets cold. "We have a robust program calendar for kids, tweens, teens and adults," the library director Rammer says. "We have a maker space where residents can come to and use our 3D printer, embroidery machine, sewing machines and equipment." Also offered is a Library of Things Collection, where everything from shovels to radon detectors to ice cream machines and board games can be checked out with a library card.

New houses built to accommodate high demand
Houses in the northern part of the village, towards downtown and the neighborhoods around it, are the most affordable. Common styles include Cape Cods, cottages and ranch-style homes. The most grand and expensive are in the newest developments in the village's southern half, especially in the southwest corner. Popular architectural styles date back to the 1940s, while some new traditional homes with modern Craftsman and Colonial Revival designs are still in the building phase. On average, houses sell between $120,000 and $950,000, with a median price of $440,000.
"We don't have an aging community or only young people with kids coming in, but all kinds of people at different stages of life moving here," Rammer says. In addition to single-family homes, there are developments for townhouses, condos, apartments and senior communities like Grace Commons. Houses last only 25 days on the market, and prices are up 9% from the previous year. Demand is high, as are prices, but the village has a higher median income than the national average and a high level of homeownership.

Milwaukee County buses and Interstate 41
Milwaukee is only 25-minutes, or 20 miles away via Interstate 41, if traffic is light. Commuters can bypass the highway and travel along Wisconsin Route 145 to downtown. Milwaukee County Transit System routes 61 and 79 service Menomonee Falls, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 26 miles away.
The village removes snow and salts the roads after storms, which are common in the winter. An average of 47 inches of snow falls in the three months that have below-freezing average temperatures. When snow melts, the roads experience some flooding from runoff. The rivers and streams also contribute to slight flooding. Roads are maintained and updated with potholes and cracks filled regularly. "The village takes very good care of their municipality," Rammer says. "They're invested in the community, and you can see how they care for it." Summers are warm but comfortable, and daily averages rarely exceed the high 70s.
Student apprenticeships at Menomonee Falls High School
Menomonee Falls School District serves most of the village, with four elementary schools, one middle and one high school. "Menomonee Falls High School is very business-driven and has opportunities for student apprenticeships with local businesses," says Kimberly Roering, a Realtor with eXp Realty Milwaukee. A small portion of the village's southern end, where many of the new developments are, is zoned for Hamilton School District. Hamilton School District has an overall A grade on Niche – the same as Menomonee Falls – and both offer AP courses for college credits. The village has six private, religiously affiliated schools, including Calvary Baptist School, the 15th-best private kindergarten through 12th-grade school in the state.

Cultural cuisines on Appleton Avenue
Main Street to Appleton Avenue, in Downtown Menomonee Falls, is the village's center for arts, shopping and dining. Two-story buildings from the late-1800s to the mid-1900s host a range of restaurants serving their national cuisines. The assortment includes Greek, Mexican, Italian, Vietnamese and Japanese food. Roering says, "The best go-to places are all family-owned and operated favorites that have historical value because they've been rooted in the community for over 20 years." Locals can stop by Crossroads Shopping Center on Appleton Avenue for chain, department store and grocery shopping, just over a mile from downtown.

The Community Camera Co-Op helps to keep crime rates low
Menomonee Falls Police Department has a program called the Community Camera Co-Op, where residents are encouraged to register their surveillance systems with the department so police can reach out if they think a camera may have caught a crime in the act. Compared with the national average given by FBI reports, crimes in Menomonee Falls happen at a significantly lower rate. The most recent reporting showed that violent crime rates were just one-fifth of the U.S. average, while property crime rates were one-third. According to Menomonee Falls Police Department records, overall crime decreased by 4% from 2022 to 2023. As of October of 2024, crime decreased 14% from 2023 to 2024. Violent offenses in 2024, however, have been moderately higher than the previous year.
