Modern town center on a somewhat secluded isle
Downtown Mercer Island is a hub for restaurants and local shops. The vibrant community, on a somewhat secluded isle, has colorful streetscapes, culinary delights and a walkable shopping district. "Growing up on Mercer Island and raising my five children here has been a truly special experience," says Lori Holden, Broker at John L Scott Real Estate. "The island hasn't changed much over the years, which is part of its charm. There are also countless opportunities to explore nature and enjoy the stunning views. It feels like the best of all worlds here in the Pacific Northwest."
Culinary epicenter and cozy shopping
Downtown Mercer Island is the city's culinary epicenter. The local business scene is also alive with stores like Island Books, a family owned bookstore with a carefully curated selection of reads in a cozy atmosphere from colorful rugs and nostalgic typewriters. Of course, Seattle is known for coffee with nationally known chains like Starbucks, which has two locations on 27th Street. Other coffee shops like Sano Cafe have breakfast with fruit bowls and breakfast smoothies in a bright interior with light wooden accents. Mioposto has wood-fired pizza with an outdoor patio and a bar for cocktail happy hours, and Vivienne's Bistro is an Asian fusion restaurant with a twist on classic Chinese dishes. For groceries, QFC is a supermarket that also sells home décor and electronics, while Metropolitan Market is a local chain with a bakery.

Colorful condo buildings
While there are no single-family homes in Downtown Mercer Island, there are mid-rise condo buildings with modern architecture and eclectic designs, including brick and metal siding. "Until about 15 years ago, most of the downtown core consisted of single-story structures," says Holden. Simply stepping out to the street can lead residents to nearby parks, restaurants or cafes. Balconies and tall windows jut out from the flat exteriors and hang above the street, while buildings with rounded edges point to floor plans with turret rooms. This small skyline is distinctively uneven, with Mediterranean, Italianate and contemporary features all mixed into the neighborhood's profile. Condos range from $550,000 to $850,000. Townhouses start at $700,000 and reach $1.3 million for units over 3,000 square feet.

Another event is the First Fridays Art Walk, a downtown stretch along 27th Street, including gallery showcases, such as Clarke & Clarke Art + Artifacts, an antique store with paintings and international artifacts. "It's like a small town but still situated near the city," says Alexa Luckembach, Resident Services Manager at Island Square Apartments. "We're on an island, so it's a bit secluded, but there are a lot of up-and-coming restaurants, and the town center has community events throughout the year."
