A community that knows one another and gets outside

A quintessential New England small town, Middlefield's open spaces and trail access make it ideal for homebuyers looking to spend time outdoors. "It's very much a country town," says Lori Vogel, a Realtor with William Raveis Real Estate and Middlefield resident. "There's a lot of hiking and walking in the neighborhood." While Middlefield is primarily rural, there are small subdivisions throughout the town, and large yards are standard. Along with an abundance of land, beautiful scenery and fun natural attractions, Middlefield is home to a community that has built a life in this small town. "It's one of those spots where everybody knows everybody," Vogel says.

Lush lawns and deep woods surround Middlefield houses

While styles and sizes of homes vary significantly in Middlefield, one thing that remains the same from house to house is ample yards, trees and privacy. Middlefield is heavily wooded, with a few fields and lakes scattered about. Still, neighborhoods branch off the winding roads of the hills, bringing diverse homes to the area. Smaller ranches and Cape Cods can sell for as low as $250,000, and towering Colonial Revivals and new traditional builds with many bedrooms can reach $600,000. Small farmhouses and bilevels are common in the neighborhoods and the median price in town is $365,000. Those lucky enough to snag a property along one of the lakes forfeit the expansive tree-lined lawns to receive waterfront views instead. "Inventory is low in Middlefield," Vogel says. "So if you find a house that fulfills your needs, act fast."

Exploring outside is standard for locals

There is no shortage of ways to get outside in Middlefield. Most of the homes have enough yard space for pools, playgrounds and gardens, but the sprawling open spaces of the town host a few parks, like Peckham Park. Baseball diamonds and soccer fields are bustling with little ones on the weekends and after school hours, and the skatepark and playground get plenty of attention, too. Residents on Beseck Lake and other locals can take advantage of the small sand beach and boat launch for water activities. Wadsworth Falls State Park is also nearby and is a popular hiking spot because of its many forested trails that lead to streams, bridges, abandoned buildings and a waterfall.

Where the community gathers over food and events

The Lyman family has farmed the land for over 275 years and is well known and connected in the community through Lyman Orchards. In addition to a farm store with fresh produce, homemade pies, cider and treats, the orchards also have apple, berry and pumpkin picking. The farm regularly hosts seasonal events, including AutumnFest and a Sunflower Maze. Connected to the farm is Lyman Orchards Golf Club, voted Connecticut's best public golf course by Connecticut Magazine. The club schedules public tee times on its greens and offers memberships with perks like locker service and social gatherings. Powder Ridge Mountain Park & Resort is open for skiing and winter sports to stay active in the snow. During the warmer months, residents can hike, mountain bike or play paintball there.

A rotating menu of delectable food

Spread out and quiet, Middlefield is home to few restaurants or shopping destinations, but Blackbird Tavern is the exception. This local favorite offers a tasty rotating menu of meatloaf burgers, hot buttered lobster rolls and blackened salmon. The tavern also has an outdoor eating area for enjoying a meal and drink in the calm atmosphere Middlefield is known for. Not too far from a major highway

Though there is no transit in the area, and walkability is low, it's easy to get out of town. Vogel says one of her favorite things about Middlefield is the convenient access to nearby highways like Interstate 91, which runs south towards New Haven and north towards Hartford. Meriden and Middletown are under 15 minutes away for commuters, and the closest major airport, Bradley International, is 33 miles north.
