Established suburban neighborhood in the Robious Road Corridor
Roxshire is a suburban Midlothian neighborhood with style. The community was developed by James Kenneth Timmons, who also designed the adjoining Salisbury neighborhood and captured the region's growing demand for spacious, suburban living options in the second half of the 20th century. "Once it caught on, people wanted to live in that Robious Road Corridor," says Dianne Long, Realtor at Napier Commercial Realtors and Midlothian resident. "He developed Roxshire as a scaled-down version [of Salisbury]; the houses were a little closer together and not as large." Still, many of the neighborhood's homes have over 3,000 feet of living space and backyards that make them popular among families. And though homes among the tall trees feel private, locals are a quick drive from parks along the James River, well-rated schools in the Chesterfield County public school system, and restaurants and shopping on the Midlothian Turnpike.
Colonial Revival homes on half-acre lots
Most of the single-family homes in Roxshire were built between the 1970s and 1990s. The majority are Colonial Revivals, with symmetrical facades and brick or wood exteriors. Shutters are often painted in muted reds or blues for a timeless look. Some homes built in the '90s incorporate colonial design elements into houses with asymmetrical facades and pitched roofs for a more contemporary look. "Timmons didn't like the contemporary stuff. He wouldn't approve them," Long says. "When they were first building [Salisbury and Roxshire], colonials were what you always saw and what everybody was wanting. As time progressed, some of the other styles have come into play." Houses usually sell for between $500,000 and $800,000.
Most properties sit on about half an acre, with tall trees and brush providing privacy between neighbors. "It's older, established, and nothing is clear-cut. People are dying to have the privacy of the trees and larger lots," says James Strum, Broker at Long & Foster Real Estate and Roxshire resident.
Kids go to highly rated Chesterfield County public schools
Students living in Roxshire may begin at Robious Elementary School, which earns a B from Niche, and Robious Middle School, which earns a B-plus. Older students complete their education at A-minus-rated James River High School. James River High is home to The Center for Leadership and International Relations. Students accepted into the program take specialized classes in subjects including communication, ethics and service, and they complete an internship and service-oriented capstone project.
River access at Robious Landing Park and Salisbury Country Club
Robious Landing Park has hiking trails and opportunities for canoeing and kayaking on the James River about 3 miles from Roxshire. The community has proposed a neighborhood park on Corner Rock Road that would have a playground and picnic tables. The park is still in the planning stages as of December 2024. Salisbury Country Club is about 2 miles west. This private facility has a 27-hole golf course, swimming pool, tennis and pickleball courts, and a clubhouse that hosts member-only events. The Virginia Powerboat Association is a private boating club nearby on the James River. "You have the best of both worlds: you've got private venues you can join, but you also have the public availability of the parks," Strum says. "You can choose whatever lifestyle you want."
Events with the Roxshire Civic Association
The Roxshire Civic Association hosts community events like an annual Easter egg hunt and July 4th bike parade. Each year on Christmas Eve, the Roxshire and Salisbury neighborhoods glow with holiday luminaries along every street. Homeowners come together to set up for the event and celebrate the holiday. The Civic Association also has resident-run committees such as the Architectural Review, Landscaping, Membership and Welcoming committees.
Extensive shopping and dining options off Midlothian Turnpike
Midlothian Turnpike runs just south of the neighborhood and is lined with businesses, restaurants and stores like Sam's Club, Wegmans and Target. Chesterfield Towne Center Mall is also off Midlothian Turnpike, just outside the neighborhood. It has stores like Macy's, Barnes & Noble and HomeGoods. Nearby Huguenot Road has doctors' offices, chain restaurants and local spots such as Bell Greek Authentic Grill, a casual Mediterranean venue with patio seating. Carytown, Richmond's shopping and dining district, is about 10 miles east.
Driving to downtown Richmond from Roxshire
Roxshire is car-dependent. Commuters can get to downtown Richmond, 13 miles east, via Robious Road (the neighborhood's northern boundary) and Powhite Parkway. Johnston-Willis Hospital is 3 miles east and Richmond International Airport is 25 miles east. Roxshire's Cap Index crime score is a 2, lower than the national average of 4.
