Industrial village turned thriving central district
Officially separating from Sutton in 1813 to become a distinct incorporated town, Millbury was once an industrial village producing textiles, guns, and lumber through mills along the Blackstone River. Today, the neighborhood of Millbury is a thriving central district with suburban homes and a New England small-town atmosphere. The village of Millbury is the northernmost town in the Blackstone River Valley, and it is the first town south of bustling Worcester. Much of Millbury's amenities are insulated; the city has its own school district, its own mall and a pedestrian trail for recreation that residents can access through the neighborhood.
Preserving downtown through the Millbury Historical Society
Downtown Millbury is also a historic district, preserving centuries-old buildings like the Asa Waters Mansion, a 19th-century Georgian-style estate on Elm Street. The mansion also hosts the Millbury Historical Society, which hosts events and exhibits highlighting the town's history. Millbury Public Library was built as one of the original Carnegie libraries in 1915 and faithfully served the city for over a century.
