A quite community despite the nearby Timmerman Airport
Vogel Park is a suburb on Milwaukee's northwest side, about 9 miles from downtown and 5 miles from all the shopping and fun in Wauwatosa. It shares a border with a private airport and is bisected by a main road but is still described as quiet. "I've been there about 15 years," says Anthony Rupert, the owner of Northgate Taste, an online cheesecake bakery. "There is only one real, main airport in Milwaukee, General Mitchell Field, and it's about a half-hour ride from where I am. If I lived over there, there'd be much more noise." Residents are a quick walk or drive from public schools, grocery stores, restaurants and public parks. Meanwhile, bus stops surround the neighborhood and dot its center along Appleton Avenue. "It's a nice environment to raise a family in — a very safe and quiet area," says Realtor Leah Hunt, a Milwaukee expert with Brew City Realtors. "It seems like the neighbors are friendly as well."

Modestly priced ranch-style homes
Many residents live in apartments, but the neighborhood also has single- and multi-family homes. Most are ranch-style houses from the 1950s to the '70s — some smaller builds with linear floor plans and detached garages out back, others with higher square footage and attached garages. Homes are situated relatively close together, but backyards are spacious enough for a trampoline and a barbecue with friends. Front yards are tidy and modest in landscaping, and sidewalks create a neighborly path between homes. Prices range from $180,000 to $240,000, depending on the extent of renovations.

Close to Havenwoods State Forest
Community anchors include Blessed Savior Parish, which locals praise for its upbeat choir, and the area's namesake green space on its eastern side. "It's more of a field. Not anywhere to set up picnic tables or a playground. It's barely a block long," Rupert says. "Now that I think about it, it probably was a park back in the day, but very few people refer to it that way." Larger parks nearby include an expansive greenbelt just west and Havenwoods State Forest, less than 5 miles northeast on Hopkins Street. The forest's woodlands, wetlands and grassy areas shelter ponds and 6 miles of trails. Some say its proximity to North Sherman Boulevard leads to moderate traffic noise, but overall, it's a natural respite.

Children's choir and a career-tech school
Two Milwaukee Public Schools operate in and just outside Vogel Park. Engleburg Elementary School, in the north end of the neighborhood, accommodates kindergarten through fifth grade. Parents appreciate its unique student activities, including its African American Children's Choir. To the east, Grantosa Drive School welcomes roughly 650 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. For high school, it's a short drive to James Madison Academic Campus. All three schools have a C-minus grade on Niche. As an alternative, the Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education, with its emphasis on small-setting learning and hands-on experience through student apprenticeships, is about 3 miles west.

Dinner at Burrito Bueno
Rupert's homemade cheesecakes come in many flavors, including KitKat and caramel apple, and his business has been spotlighted in Milwaukee restaurant write-ups. He often creates custom cakes, including gluten-free and vegan varieties. Residents can follow Appleton Avenue to several international eateries. Burrito Bueno operates just beyond the neighborhood's southeast corner for a fajita and margarita fix. Mayfair Mall is 5 miles southwest in Wauwatosa with familiar chain retailers, such as H&M and Forever 21.
