The community creates its own elements of fun
The spirit of the residents of the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of Minneapolis is strong and permeating? How strong is it? It’s so strong that just because Mother Nature may keep the cold fluffy white stuff to herself that allows the community’s wildly popular art sled race to glide across the park doesn’t mean that the event doesn’t have to happen. Not only does the community rally together to make it happen, but they also do it with a little inspiration from poet e.e. cummings. In a message to the community after a lack of snow threatened to cancel the 2024 Art Sled Rally at Powderhorn Park event, artsledrally.com posted the following statement: “We'll still be there and we'll be committed to getting you down the slope one way or another. Wheels? Fancy footwork? Draglines? We're brainstorming it all this week. So if you've built something or are working on it now, finish it! We will honor your time and commitment even if we have to hurl you down the hill to do it! And the rest of you? I hope you'll still come on by and cheer the mess even if you don't have to freeze your toes to do it!” The notice went on with a copy of Cumming’s famous poem, “all ignorance toboggans into know.” One would think in a perfect world that Mother Nature would let the snow fall and watch the community delight in her usual winter offerings. While that did not happen, the community still showed up in their colorful and themed make-shift sleds and were raucously pulled down a makeshift slope of disassembled cardboard boxes. While some sleds fell apart and others glided a few feet, everyone felt the strength of this little community. “You’re going to get a really active community here, with neighbors looking out for each other,” says Realtor Mike Smith with Anderson Realty. “It’s very walkable, very bikeable, with immediate access to downtown and public transportation – and it’s approachable from an economic standpoint.”

There’s always something to do outdoors
Centrally located, Powderhorn Park is where neighbors come together. Home to the Art Sled Rally held in January, May Day Festival and the Powderhorn Arts Festival, which celebrates its 32nd year in 2023, the park is a community focal point. This area around Powderhorn Lake was among the first places considered for a park in the city in 1883. Stretching four city blocks, the classic community park features plenty of greenspace for kicking back on a blanket during the warmer months and watching the clouds float by as you lay back and look at the sky. Enjoy the rolling topography as you walk the designated trail around the lake. Bring your fishing pole and spend an afternoon waiting patiently for a nibble on the pier behind the Recreation Center. Beat the summer heat at the wading pool or take the kids to one of the playgrounds to run wild.
Running, walking or just reading a book are all common sites on nice days in Powderhorn Park.

Larger homes with ornate details are the norm
An established haven for artistic-minded bohemians, Powderhorn Park is a Minneapolis neighborhood with its own distinct vibe. Single-family homes typically range in price from $310,000 to $640,000, however, even though there are more modest homes, most tend to be on the bigger side. The real estate market in Powderhorn Park is very competitive, with a median sale price of $20,000 less than the city average. There are slightly bigger single-family homes than in neighboring communities, with bigger footprints, not just bungalows and ramblers. Most of the homes were built between in the early 1900s and favor American Foursquare and late-era Victorian styles. The neighborhood is a great prospect for looking at growing house values, Smith says, because “if you have a duplex, for example, you’re going to get a bunch of offers the first day you’re on the market.”

Reverie Cafe + Bar is a bright and colorful vegan restaurant serving up a plant-based menu for lunch and dinner. Guests love their spacious outdoor patio which is dog-friendly and the full coffee bar.

We've lived in Powderhorn for 10 yrs. It has wonderful diversity and a thriving arts community too. There are some issues with petty theft (package theft, looking for unlocked cars, etc...). But we've been able to stop those with some security measures. Neighbors are great. We live on a block with almost all duplexes and most are owner occupied. Some of the issues arise from our proximity to ChiLake Liquors. But being so close to the park, Mayday Cafe, greenway and Midtown Global Market make up for it.
