Living near beaches and Del Monte Shopping Center

Sitting on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, East Monterey is a neighborhood with older homes and some major attractions. “The biggest thing is the beach because it’s one of the calmer and less touristy beaches in Monterey,” says Monica Browning of Over the Moon Realty, who has nearly a decade of experience in the area. “But El Estero Park and Del Monte Shopping Center have also been around for decades and are big selling points.” These three staples of East Monterey form the backbone of the neighborhood. On the northern end, the soft sand of Del Monte Beach is a popular spot for surfers and locals who want to watch local wildlife like seals and whales. Farther inland is the massive El Estero Park, while the neighborhood’s southernmost area has been home to the open-air Del Monte Shopping Center since the 1960s.

Del Monte Beach has a boardwalk making it easy for locals to walk along the dunes and look out on the bay. Monterey Bay Park is the place for relaxing in the sand or playing beach volleyball. El Estero Park is a 45-acre recreation area in the heart of East Monterey. One of the park’s major features is the Dennis the Menace Playground, with jungle gyms, slides, and a statue of its namesake. The playground was designed by Hank Ketcham, creator of the Dennis the Menace comic strip. El Estero Park also has a skate park, a stocked fishing lake and athletic fields. Paddle boat rentals are available to take out on El Estero Lake. Golds Gym is the spot for an indoor workout, while Cinemark Century movie theatre offers the latest movies.

Open-air shopping and a Whole Foods

The southern part of the neighborhood is anchored by the Del Monte Shopping Center. This open-air shopping destination features Macy’s, Pottery Barn and a Lululemon outlet. Locals can grab their groceries at Whole Foods, across the street from the center. Valnizza’s Deli and Market has an extensive beer and wine selection, along with some select groceries and pre-made meals. The London Bridge Pub, decorated with Union Jacks and old-school British phone booths, offers British classic fare and a patio with views of the bay. Sapporo Sushi and Steakhouse is decked with Japanese lanters and floor-to-ceiling windows for water views. Locals also head to Dust Bowl Brewing Co. Tap Depot for a craft beer. The covered, dog-friendly patio has turf as well as heaters and couches for a comfortable experience year-round.
