McMurray
Mid-20th century style builds with modern twists
Many brick ranch-style houses, bi-levels, split-levels and Colonial Revivals occupy sloping or raised lots. Some infill projects have also led to new contemporary houses. McMurray’s lots are generally deeper and wider than in other similar neighborhoods and some houses have distinct features like half-circular driveways. Emanating a bedroom community feel, neighbors are often out walking or biking on the streets. A number of the decades old houses here have also undergone renovations. Crosslin recently sold one house in the area that he says was once like a “60s time capsule.” The investors who bought the property added more detailed woodwork, installed a detached accessory dwelling unit behind the main house and altered the floor plan by taking out some of the walls to create a more open and modern interior. The investors initially bought the house for about $350,000, but ended up selling it for double the price point after the renovation. “We’re seeing a lot of that modernization coming to that area,” Crosslin says. Price points can go from just over $500,000 for a roughly 1,500-square-foot ranch style house to about $640,000 for a newer and larger contemporary style house. There are some townhouses that run between $340,000 and $410,000, depending on size and age.A short drive from Nolensville Pike’s multicultural dining scene
With Nolensville Pike running right along McMurray’s eastern bounds, many in the neighborhood are a short drive from one of the city’s most diverse dining and shopping scenes. Nolensville is lined by a series of international grocery stores and restaurants serving a variety of cuisines that include Indian, Mexican, Honduran, Greek, Kurdish, Thai and North African. Among the options just north of McMurray is El Tapatio, a food truck that also maintains a small indoor dining space. Popular for late night meals, it serves options like authentic Mexican style sandwiches and corn tortilla tacos with jalapenos. El Tapatio is just down the road from Bangkokville, where patrons can order crisp egg rolls and curry chicken with a plate of rice shaped into a heart. A little farther north is the Plaza Mariachi, a live entertainment venue where visitors can also enjoy food and beverages. Past shows there have included performances by aerialist dancers. Grocery stores in this area include the Patel Brothers, which is known for Indian foods, and K&S World Market. The internationally-focused K&S is easy to spot by its facade, which is covered with a farm-themed mural. Walmart and Kroger are also in this area.Learning history at the Tennessee Agricultural Museum
The Ellington Agricultural Center, Tennessee Agricultural Museum and Whitfield Park all lie right between McMurray and neighbor Crieve Hall to the west. Visitors to the agricultural institutions are treated to thousands of artifacts providing looks into the state’s farming history prior to the 20th century. There are remodeled log cabins complete with housewares, and the museum features wagons and farm equipment. Visitors can also see some farm animals grazing in the area. The agricultural center is home to Brentwood Hall, a more than century old Neoclassical style estate that serves as the home of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and other other agencies. Children regularly visit Whitfield Park to burn off energy on the playground. Park goers can easily access a trail that runs along the Sevenmile Creek. More recreational fun exists along Nolensville Pike. Friends and siblings can play rounds of bowling at Tusculum Strike & Spare, while avid rock climbers can keep in practice at The Crag Nashville. Farther east, dog owners often visit William A. Pitts Park to let their pets roam. The green space also includes a playground and baseball diamond.Middle school options at strongly rated Valor network
One of the schools younger children here can attend is the Norman Binkley Elementary School, which received a C-plus grade from ratings site Niche. They can then go to McMurray Middle School before finishing their secondary education at John Overton High School. The two schools respectively received C-minus and B-minus grades from Niche. Students here also have the opportunity to attend institutions operating under the Valor College Academies network of public charter schools. The network’s two schools serving McMurray are the Valor Flagship and Valor Voyager academies, which respectively received A and B grades from Niche. The two schools serve students in fifth to eighth grade. Valor is the only charter school group in the state to have received an A-plus rating from the Tennessee Department of Education’s School Letter Grades. The system employs a unique model that includes using the Socratic Seminar method in English language arts classes. The Socratic Seminar is known for its distinct reliance on group discussions.Farm Fun Day at Tennessee Agricultural Museum
The area around the Ellington Agricultural Center hosts a variety of free educational events throughout the year focused on subjects like gardening and horticulture. A number of the events are also geared toward younger children, and those include a summer Friday program at the Tennessee Agricultural Museum covering topics like creek critters and how corn is grown in the state. The children attending the events get to do special craft activities. The museum also hosts an admission free Farm Fun Day Festival in July. Goers can enjoy live music, watch craftsmen demonstrations and interact with some farm animals.I-65 commuter route to downtown Nashville
Interstate 65 runs just west of McMurray. The interstate provides a direct route to downtown Nashville, which is about 11 miles north of the neighborhood. I-65 also connects to Interstate 24 to provide a route to the Nashville International Airport about 13 miles north of McMurray. Those needing alternative transportation can catch WeGo Public Transit buses on Nolensville Pike, which runs along the neighborhood’s eastern bounds. For medical needs, there’s the TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center about 3 miles north of McMurray.
