An urban community 2 miles from downtown
Newhallville is a community-oriented urban neighborhood about 2 miles north of downtown New Haven. The neighborhood is anchored by Beaver Pond Park, which offers a mix of natural and recreational attractions and is home to several community gardens. Newhallville is also home to an innovative initiative called The Learning Corridor, a space designed to provide residents with consistent recreational and community-building opportunities. "It's a nice place," says Doreen Abubakar, founder and executive director of Community Placemaking Engagement Network, a local nonprofit that has been instrumental in the corridor's revitalization efforts. "It's an up-and-coming neighborhood."
Parks, trails and The Learning Corridor
Along the west side of the neighborhood, Beaver Pond Park is a large green space that features natural wetlands, primitive nature trails and plenty of waterfront views. Its recreational amenities include a baseball and football field surrounded by a track; the facilities areused by two local city high schools. The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, also known as the Farmington Canal Greenway, is a paved pathway that runs through the neighborhood and stretches over 50 miles from New Haven to Suffield.
Along the trail at Newhallville Park is The Learning Corridor, a community-oriented space that utilizes the greenway to promote physical activity and overall health in a neighborhood where residents suffer disproportionately from obesity, diabetes and asthma. Volunteers are stewards of the corridor and help in organizing year-round events. "There are 7,500 people in a 1-mile radius, so my nonprofit opted to build the infrastructure with The Learning Corridor," says Abubakar. "We've been doing events for the past four years like bike rides on the trail, a pancake breakfast every Saturday and literacy programs, and those are all outdoors because we don't have a building. But we purchased a vacant lot across the street and established a maker's shed. We also have a native plant nursery."

Multi-family homes and duplexes
Densely populated city streets feature a mix of single-family homes primarily built in the early 20th century. Many of these properties have been converted into multi-family units due to a high percentage of renters in the area, while contemporary duplexes are scattered in between. Architectural styles include Colonial Revivals, Victorians and Queen Annes. Sales prices in the area typically range from the low 100,000s to the high 300,000s for single-family homes, depending on interior updates and square footage. Multi-family housing units range from the low 300,000s to the mid-500,000s. "Like many universities around the country, Yale has played a role in revitalizing Newhallville," says Veronica Stillings, a local real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty. "As Yale has expanded into surrounding streets, the neighborhood is finally getting attention from developers and investors." Yale University also offers a Homebuyer Program to eligible employees. The program provides grants to homebuyers in specific neighborhoods, including Newhallville. Newhallville earns a CAP Index crime score of 5 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. However, homicide scores an 8 out of 10, and robbery scores a 7 out of 10.

Community gardens and local restaurants
Fussy Coffee is a contemporary gathering place in a small commercial center in the neighborhood's southeast corner near downtown New Haven. Morning crowds gather for cold brews, lattes, and classic American brunch fare. In the evening, coffee is swapped for handcrafted cocktails, beer and wine. Right next door, Ricky D's Rib Shack is known as one of the best barbecue restaurants around town. Pork ribs drenched in sauce, wings and brisket sandwiches keep patrons coming back. However, kansa-lina, a pile of fries topped with pork, barbecue sauce and coleslaw, is a Ricky D delicacy. Ricky D's even has its own interactive game available for download on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
Several neighborhood convenience stores are spread throughout the community, and Stop & Shop is about 1 mile south. However, community gardens, such as the local Starr Street Community Farm, have become popular for addressing food deserts around the city. Gather New Haven, a social and environmental justice-oriented nonprofit, supports over 40 gardens throughout New Haven by providing land, soil, seeds, tools and technical support. The organization also hosts free social gatherings throughout the city's community gardens that feature family-friendly activities, food trucks and more.
