A convenient location with lower housing prices
Known by many names throughout its 200-year history, from Sodom Hill to Mount Pleasant, the neighborhood today known simply as The Hill is a vibrant New Haven area known for its abundant trees, parks, community gardens, restaurants and resources, including a public library, community service organizations and the Yale-New Haven Hospital and Medical School. A neighborhood that once served as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 19th century, The Hill was established as a racially integrated planned community in the 1830s, and the neighborhood population today continues its history of diversity.
With Interstate 95 running along its southern border and downtown New Haven less than 2 miles away, The Hill provides residents with a convenient location, and that convenience comes with comparatively lower prices. “The Hill is where you can find affordable housing, especially compared to the rest of the city, and still be close to everything,” says Lauren Freedman, a local Realtor who has sold more than a dozen Hill properties.
A range of shopping and dining options
The neighborhood’s convenient location means that locals don't have to travel far for daily needs. They can pop into a local barber, grab household and food staples at Shop Smart and pick up takeout from Jammin' Jamaican Cuisine, all on one corner. Key Food Fresh provides groceries, and the neighborhood's culinary scene includes Mexican, Dominican and Chinese, as well as American soul food. For a special night out, Freedman recommends heading to the water’s edge. “The harbor has some great options for dining along the boardwalk and incredible views,” she says. Shell and Bones Oyster Bar and Grill, located at the end of a dock extending into Winter Harbor, is a favorite for steak, seafood and sunsets. For more intensive retail therapy, residents typically head to West Haven, about 3 miles west, where a variety of national retailers have a presence.
