Close-knit community in one of the Big Easy’s oldest neighborhoods

McDonough sits right along the West Bank of the Mississippi River, just across the water from downtown New Orleans. This community is part of the larger and historic Algiers area, which was established in the early 1700s and is the Big Easy’s second oldest neighborhood. McDonough itself flourished at the turn of the 20th century when immigrants moved to the West Bank. Ferry service between the river’s two banks helped the growth. Now, McDonough is within reach of several charter schools and a number of dining chains, some of which have regularly engaged with the Algiers neighborhood at large on particular programs benefitting area youth and institutions like local police. “One person owns all the McDonalds in Algiers, which is great because they do a lot of community stuff,” says Leslie Ellison, an agent with Boyd Realtors LLC and who has made several sales in McDonough. “They hire a lot of the local kids. You can walk into the McDonald’s and there’s your little neighbor from next door working there. It’s more like a small town.” Some of these community activities involving the fast-food chain have included scholarship giveaways, free Happy Meals during certain times of the year and breakfast and coffee sit-downs with local police. “It’s family oriented. There’s the proximity to downtown, grocery stores, shopping and low crime. I would say that would be among the number one reasons, and some great schools,” Ellison says about some of the reasons people seek out the area in and around McDonough.

Homes with common New Orleans traits

Homes here reflect a mix of styles seen across much of the city. They include both single and double shotgun homes – the latter housing duplexes – camelbacks and raised cottages with bungalow touches. Double shotgun duplexes can run between $200,000 and $300,000, while newer or renovated single shotgun homes with cottage and bungalow features can run between $300,000 and $400,000. There, however, some fixer uppers that can be found for around $100,000 or less.

Shop at the Oakwood Center and later try out Indian food

The Oakwood Center mall is located just south of McDonough between the Westbank Expressway and Terry Parkway. Shoppers there can browse a number of chain shops and apparel stores. They’ll also find a location of New Orleans’ famous Cafe Du Monde, where they can get a sampling of the renowned coffees and beignets. Within McDonough, fans of Indian cuisine can stop by the Plume Algiers, which started as a pop-up restaurant before moving into its own building on Teche Street. The Algiers Point Free Lil Pantry, located at the community garden on Opelousas Avenue, aims to target food insecurity by offering a variety of goods donated by local residents. Donated goods often include food, soap, baby formula and other essentials.
