Upscale living minutes on the West Bank
Lying on the West Bank of the Mississippi River and sitting southwest of Meraux, New Aurora is a longstanding, quiet neighborhood featuring upscale homes, pocket parks and a luxury gated community. Jane Hicks, a Realtor who has worked in the area for 40 years, says people choose to move to New Aurora because of its curb appeal and location.
“It’s an attractive neighborhood with high, solid ground,” Hicks says. “It’s also convenient to downtown and the Crescent City Connection. You’re a ferry ride across from the French Quarter, so it’s a really convenient location.”
New Aurora is a popular choice for homebuyers who want quiet, slow-paced living less than half an hour from the Central Business District.

Modern, French-influenced architecture
Whether buyers are looking for suburbia, luxury or country living, New Aurora has a variety of home options. English Turn is an upscale gated community and is the largest subdivision in the area. It’s brimming with houses ranging from ranches built in the late 1990s to newly constructed colonial-style mansions. The community is built around the Norman Canal, which provides waterfront views. English Turn also has its own walking trail, golf club and tennis courts. Smaller, older brick ranches in English Turn generally sit in an area known as “The Villas”. They range in price from $450,000 to $600,000. Homes outside of “The Villas” can sell anywhere between $600,000 for an option built in the late ‘90s and $1.2 million for a new construction. HOA dues range from $250 to $350.
Homes outside of English Turn vary from minimal traditional options made of shingle siding to much larger French Colonial and Modern Traditional builds. Streets adjacent to each other can almost seem like they’re worlds apart. Bryson Street, for instance, has a more rustic rural feel than Arbor Circle's suburban nature. The farms along Willow Drive starkly contrast the newly constructed luxury homes along Delacroix Road.
Most homes in New Aurora, however, are similar in architecture and size. Brick and stucco French Colonial, Colonial Revival, Modern Traditional and minimal traditional homes sit on at least a half-acre each. Thickets of trees and wooded areas separate roads, so neighbors are far and few. Homes are pushed back from the narrow streets with stretching front yards. They feature long driveways and attached garages, eliminating the stress of street parking. Manicured lawns, shaded avenues and ample yard space contribute to a quiet atmosphere.
Prices outside of English Turn range from $400,000 for older options and climb to $800,000 for new constructions.
Bird watching, fishing and hiking
This suburb features ample green space in its eastern region. The Audubon Wilderness Park is a popular birdwatching destination where Red Shoulder Hawks, hummingbirds and barred owls are commonplace. Several venomous snake species, including timber rattlesnakes, cottonmouths and copperheads can be found hunting down squirrels, rabbits and raccoons.
And while there are several pocket parks in and around New Aurora, Woodlands Conservancy’s is a hiking spot brimming with wildlife. Visitors often highlight encounters with armadillos, deer and rabbits. It’s also one of the few trails that allows both horses and dogs.
The quiet shaded streets of New Aurora are a great place to walk with friends and pets.

Harte Charter School is also nearby and has a C-plus rating on Niche.

Many families also opt for private schools such as Louise S. McGehee School. The pre-kindergarten through 12th grade all girls school has an A rating and is located 12 miles west in the Garden District.
Crescent City Bridge and the Algiers Ferry
11-mile drive from the neighborhood—and drivers will have to cross two bridges to access it. Residents take River Road to the Woodland Bridge/General de Gaulle Highway, which connects them to the Crescent City Connection. The Algiers Ferry Terminal is about 10 miles west of the neighborhood, and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is about a 25-mile drive.
Algiers Mardi Gras and fireworks
Residents don’t have to drive far to join in on events. “Since it’s conveniently located near downtown, it’s easy to enjoy events without dealing with all the noise,” says Hicks. Go Fourth on The River, the annual fireworks show held along the Mississippi River brings out residents from around the city. The Algiers Mardi Gras Festival, which is held in Federal City, happens on the first Saturday in February and brings the community together through food, music, and a parade.
Flooding concerns for many
While New Aurora sits on higher ground than surrounding areas, flash flooding is still a concern for many.
