Suburban Neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana
Orleans Parish 70127, 70128
Part of New Orleans East, Read Boulevard East is one of the newest sections of the city. Much of the East was unable to be developed before the 1950s and 1960s because it was marshy grasslands and cypress swamp. After draining, houses began to pop up along the high ground of Chef Menteur Ridge, and as more land was reclaimed, the Read Boulevard area became increasingly popular. Today, the community is near major roadways, nature areas and boutique bakeries.
Selena Carey, a Realtor with Face to Face Realty, says the neighborhood “is more reasonably priced than other areas of New Orleans. You get more for your money.” Bryan Jourdain, a Realtor with Delisha Boyd LLC says, “It’s a very large area. There are a wide variety of homes. Starters, investments and luxury homes are all here. There’s a place for anyone no matter their stage of life.”
That variety is evident the second you enter the neighborhood. Everything from Georgian-inspired homes to modern designs rests along the streets. Cottages, shingle houses and custom builds mingle among contemporary styles, ranchers, stucco homes and more, on lots that tend to be around a half acre. Prices range from $180,000 to $450,000.
One of the perks of living in Read Boulevard East is its proximity to nature. The DiBenedetto Playground is nearly two acres of open green space with basketball and tennis courts, field lights, and play equipment. It was renamed in 1960 for Lawrence DiBenedetto, the second director of the New Orleans Playground Commission in the early 1900s.
Another nearby green space is Joe W. Brown Park. The land was originally given to the city by Mr. Brown’s widow, provided it was named after her late husband. The park consists of a football stadium, tennis center and archery range. For tennis and archery appointments, reservations are required, but the classes are free for young people and adults. In addition to a recreation center with an indoor pool, the park offers aquatic classes for all ages and skill levels. There are also basketball courts, all-purpose fields, play equipment, and a walking path. Pets are welcome as long as they stay on a leash for everyone’s safety.
Adjacent to Joe Brown Park, the Audubon Louisiana Nature Center occupies 86 acres of hardwood bottomland forest. It has 2 miles of walking trails, a 4,000-square-foot interpretive center, and more than 80 ranger programs. Opened in 1980, the center was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, but it has been rebuilt with modern facilities. Named one of the top five urban nature centers in the nation, the center is only 20 minutes from Downtown New Orleans and features live animals, wildlife exhibits, and a teaching greenhouse. There’s even a downloadable field guide that doubles as a coloring book for after your visit.
If you’re a fan of freshly baked bread, Dong Phuong Bakery has everything you need for breakfast, lunch, or even a dinner party. Begun in the early 1980s out of the owner’s home, the business grew to become one of the first Vietnamese restaurants in the Greater New Orleans area. The bakery was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina but was quickly rebuilt and expanded. The business began delivering and selling to local restaurants and grocery stores, and it now supplies over 100 eateries with bread each day. The bakery gained national recognition with a James Beard Foundation American Classic award in 2018.
Served by the New Orleans Public Schools system, the neighborhood is home to Lake Forest Elementary Charter School, which teaches kindergarten through eighth grade.
Bordered by six-lane Read Boulevard and Interstates 10 and 510, Read Boulevard East offers residents easy access to the rest of the city, as well as a great variety of houses and green spaces.
