A history-proud community
The historic Huntington neighborhood in Newport News is proud of its history and heritage, and its cultural centers bear the names of Huntington’s local heroes and icons. The community theater is named after Ella Fitzgerald, known worldwide as “The First Lady of Song,” while the Pearl Bailey Library is named for the late actress and singer born just a few blocks away. The community center at the heart of Huntington is named after Dorie Miller, an African-American Navy hero who served aboard the USS West Virginia during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Miller courageously defended the base by operating an anti-aircraft machine gun during the attack, and his heroics were showcased throughout the region to highlight the role of African-American service members during WWII. In 2023, Newport News approved a $100 million revitalization plan to rebuild the Dorie Miller Community Center, combining it with the Pearl Bailey Library to create a state-of-the-art community center that honors Huntington’s history and heroes.

A tale of two neighborhoods
Interstate 665 cuts a horizontal line across the center of the Huntington neighborhood, dividing it into two distinct residential districts. The campus of Newsome Park Elementary occupies much of the neighborhood north of I-664, leaving just enough room for a small enclave of single-family ranch homes and brick apartment buildings. Most of the homes in Huntington are located south of I-664, where the bright and well-maintained streetscapes are laid out in a grid around the Doris Miller Community Center. Prospective buyers can choose between the neighborhood’s ranch, colonial-style townhouses and American Foursquare homes, all priced between $100,000 and $225,000. "There are tons of historic homes with early 1900's architecture," says Dana Robbins, Realtor and associate broker with RW Towne Realty. "Plus, the housing prices are well below the national average."

Navigating the peninsula
Located near the Hampton Roads Beltway Bridge on the southwestern corner of the Newport News peninsula, Huntington sits near the banks of the James River as it widens before flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. Huntington is less than 60 miles southeast of Richmond via Interstate 64, and the neighborhood is bisected by Interstate 664. Public transportation is available from the bus stops along Wickham Avenue, and Amtrak’s Northeast Regional line makes its final stop at the Newport News Station only minutes from Huntington, offering convenient and affordable service to major cities like Boston, New York, Richmond and Washington, DC.

A dining scene with rhythm
While Huntington is home to a few small bodega-style convenience stores and seafood markets, the nearest retail options are 3 miles north in Carver, where residents can choose between a Walmart Supercenter and the smaller shops within Newmarket South Shopping Center. Thankfully, a Piggly Wiggly grocery store is conveniently located on Jefferson Avenue, just a few blocks west of Huntington, along with 7 Brew Coffee, a community-focused drive-through-only coffee stand. The Train Station Restaurant serves freshly caught seafood inside a historic train depot, where diners can enjoy live jazz music and riverfront views on the restaurant’s outdoor patio. Coastal Fermentory is a significant part of Newport News’ thriving local beer scene, a friendly neighborhood brewery serving hard kombucha and specialty beers with names like Chill Vibes, Free Expression and Fresh Perspective.

Huntington's historic places and parks
The Huntington Community does not have any parks located within its immediate boundaries, but residents can drive north to Briarfield Park, home to 49 acres of picnic areas, playgrounds and lighted sports complexes, a popular spot in southern Newport News for playdates, cookouts and slow-pitch softball leagues. The King-Lincoln saltwater fishing pier stretches 1,600 feet into the deep waters of Hampton Roads, a perfect spot for anglers to pursue striped bass, croaker and other saltwater fish. On rainy days, residents can take in a musical or art exhibition at Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center or explore the neighborhood’s rich African-American history and culture at the Newsome House and the James A Fields House, two local sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
