About Newtown, CT

A social, close community in Fairfield County

There's a resilient, close-knit community in the Fairfield County town of Newtown, which is home to just over 27,000 residents. Established as a farming community in the 1700s, Newtown transitioned to a mill town as sawmills popped up along the Pootatuck River. But today, it's a peaceful suburb where many prioritize connection, meeting up at parks and gardens to socialize. “Whenever I take my dog to the park, it’s hard to get around the loop because people always stop me to chat and pet my dog,” says Tricia Farin, Realtor with William Raveis, who has lived in Newtown for more than two decades. Markers of the town's classic 'New England' atmosphere are found near the center of town, where New Heights Baptist Church’s tall steeple meets with Trinity Episcopal Church’s Gothic Revival stone belltower at a massive flagpole. Rising from the middle of Main Street, an American flag flutters from the 100-foot-tall flagpole, which is a point of local pride despite it being a common cause of car accidents. “We use the flagpole to denote where things are in town,” Farin says. “Someone will ask — is it near the flagpole?”

Fairfield Hills is a community hub

Off Elm Drive is Dickinson Memorial Park, which has a skate park, a playground with a rock feature for climbing, a wooden play structure, as well as fields and courts for sports. Near that is the Newtown Country Club, with a 9-hole golf course for members. “The central area for Newtown is Fairfield Hills,” Farin says. “It was an old psychiatric hospital, which was in disrepair. Now, it has a community center with a fitness area and trails where you can bring your dog. There’s not a day you won’t see people there.” Gardeners volunteer at the park’s victory garden, and kids practice on the baseball diamonds. In the village of Sandy Hook, there's the spacious Treadwell Memorial Park, where neighbors can buy memberships to the swimming pool, meet for matches on the tennis courts, watch their kids on the playground or play pickup basketball games. Also in Sandy Hook is a circular memorial park that honors the 26 people who lost their lives in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The community visits the quiet memorial pool for moments of reflection and remembrance.

Town-wide gatherings and a municipal movie theater

Newtown’s frequent community events tend to draw large crowds. “People from all over the state come to our Labor Day Parade,” Farin says. The only Labor Day Parade in the state, the themed procession features first responders, marching bands and floats sponsored by local organizations and businesses. “On Halloween, homes on Main Street pass out candy. You bring a thermos of coffee and meet up with friends,” Farin adds. In early December, there are several holiday tree lightings throughout town, complete with carolers and hot chocolate. More frequently, residents catch an inexpensive or free film at Edmond Town Hall, the town’s theater and concert venue. Kids can also run around the interactive exhibits at the EverWonder Children’s Museum.

Restaurants along Church Hill Road

Restaurants and small businesses are scattered throughout Newtown, with many concentrated along Church Hill Road. In the village of Sandy Hook, diners may walk on red-brick sidewalks, headed to order burgers and cocktails from Foundry Kitchen and Tavern, or wings and pizza from Gino's Parlor of Sandy Hook. Near the Newtown Shopping Center, residents can find sushi and hibachi at Toro. The shopping center also has two grocery stores, Big Y World Class Market and Caraluzzi's Newtown Market. The town has several locally-owned home goods and antique stores, but the closest shopping mall is Danbury Fair, about 14 miles away. The two-story indoor mall has a carousel, along with retailers like L.L. Bean, Anthropologie and Abercrombie & Fitch. Danbury Hospital is the nearest medical center, located about 10 miles west of Newtown. The hospital is part of the Nuvance Health system and has a Level II trauma center.

Classic New England homes along Main Street

The median listing price for homes in Newtown was $620,000 in 2024, making homes more expensive than the Connecticut median of $460,000 and the national median of $430,000. Newtown housing consists mainly of single-family homes, though there are some subdivisions of townhouses sprinkled throughout town. “Along Main Street, it’s very New England,” Farin says. Buyers may find homes dating back to the late 1700s, and yards are set more closely together. In other parts of town, “properties are larger, and you can keep goats and chickens if you want,” Farin says. Classic styles in Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and ranches are common, though some modern New Traditional homes have been added more recently. Smaller homes and townhouses generally cost between $200,000 and $600,000, while larger single-family homes are priced between $600,000 and $1 million.

Newtown schools earn high ratings

The Newtown School District, which scores an overall A rating from Niche, serves about 4,000 students in town. There are five elementary schools scattered throughout the district, but older students all go on to attend Newtown Middle School and then Newtown High School. Families may also choose to send their preschool through eighth-grade kids to St. Rose of Lima School, a private Catholic school that scores an A-plus from Niche.

Commuters use the interstate or drive to train stations

Residents usually depend on cars to get around town and commute to work. Interstate 84 runs through Newtown, offering a convenient route throughout Fairfield County or to New York City, which is about 70 miles southwest. U.S. and state routes crisscross through the area as well, taking drivers 20 miles to Bridgeport or 25 miles to New Haven. People working locally are often employed by the local school district or government, but many community members leave town for work. Commuters headed to Manhattan take the Metro-North commuter rail train, though there isn’t a train station in town. Though the closest train station is 9 miles away, in Bethel, the train requires commuters to transfer to the New Haven line in Stamford. Many drive 20 miles to the train station in Brewster, New York, as the Harlem line goes directly to Grand Central Terminal. For longer trips, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport are both about 75 miles southwest.

Winter weather in Newtown

Newtown experiences all four seasons and tends to have cold, icy winters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency places Fairfield County at a high risk of ice storms, winter weather and strong winds. “We’re very well versed in how to handle all sorts of winter weather,” Farin says. “Our roads get plowed pretty quickly unless it’s a small side road. With a normal snow, things don’t get shut down.”
