Congregation Beth Jacob draws Jewish families to Merry Hills
Homes in Merry Hills sit along ironically named roads like Christmas Lane and Reindeer Drive in a neighborhood across from Atlanta's largest and oldest synagogue. Since Congregation Beth Jacob's members don’t use technology on the Sabbath, the community attracts Orthodox Jewish families seeking homes within walking distance of the synagogue off Lavista Road. In years since the synagogue's 1962 opening, kosher stores and Jewish schools have sprouted up nearby to offer Orthodox-friendly amenities. "It created this critical mass of people affiliated with the congregation who live here," says Rabbi Yitz Chandler, the synagogue's executive director. "It's one of the most attractive and sought-after areas in the country for religiously observant Jewish families who want to have all of the benefits of living in a city but also be close to institutions that service their religious life." Homebuyers are also drawn by the neighborhood’s proximity to the popular Toco Hill Shopping Center, parks and major highways.
The nearby Toco Hills Shopping Center features a variety of restaurants including Chopt.
Congregation Beth Jacob is one of many places of worship nearby.
