Character at every turn
Carved into Oakland’s foothills is a neighborhood that gleans character from seemingly every home. Millsmont has a compelling collection of colorful and architecturally district dwellings — from Craftsman-style bungalows to Spanish Revival options. The residents who fill these homes enjoy stunning views of the rest of the Bay Area and combine to create a community known for its neighborly vibes and proximity to amenities. “It’s a nicely tucked-in neighborhood next to Mills College in the lower hills with twisty roads and Bay views,” says Oakland-based Realtor Michele Senitzer of Compass. “An interesting mix of homes, some with very large lots.”

Established homes with allure
The homes that peek out of Millsmont’s rolling landscape were largely built between the early to mid-20th century. But it seems that no two houses here are the same. Instead, each street has a rainbow of shades and architectural choices. Options here vary quite a bit in size, too, starting around 700 square feet and climbing to well over 3,000 square feet for some of the quadruplexes here. Senitzter describes Millsmont’s homes as beautiful. And even though many houses here have some age, updates and remodeling work are common across the neighborhood’s inventory. Single-family houses in Millsmont can sell for prices anywhere from about $500,000 to around $1 million, depending on the size.

Good eats in and around
Among the list of things this area is known for is its restaurants. Though Millsmont in particular is primarily residential, there are a couple of well-liked neighborhood haunts here to grab a quick bite. One is Mill's Hoagie & Deli Shop, which has been around since 1970. Mill’s specialty is an East Coast transplant: the cheesesteak. The pastrami hoagie is well-liked, too. But make sure to stop at the ATM because Mill’s is cash-only. Those with a sweet tooth can stroll over to Millsmont’s Quality Doughnuts, a cozy spot known for its reasonable prices as much as its tastiness.
