Here, people experience the tranquility of a rural town while still being close to amenities and local highways. Located off Pennsylvania routes 73 and 662, Oley is just 10 miles outside Reading. The community is known for having the smallest main street in Berks County, used for both business and residential.
Oley's scenic beauty is not the only reason people move here. "Many of the homes are affordable, and it's a great place to raise kids," says Springer Realty Group Realtor Lisa Varley, who lives nearby and has sold multiple homes here. The township comprises both older homes and new construction that represent a mix of architectural styles, including farmhouses, ranch-style and some Victorians. Home prices range from $280,000 to $521,000, and most plots of land are around ½-acre. Larger estates with multiple acres can cost well over $1 million. Most of the homes have at least a one-car garage. Tree-lined streets are wide and have sidewalks.
"Many people come here for the excellent schools," says 3-year resident Rebecca Zeleznick, a circulation clerk at Olley Community Library. Students start their education at Oley Valley Elementary School, which has an overall Niche rating of B-minus. Olley Valley Middle School received a B rating. Oley Valley High School has a B-minus from Niche and offers a robust athletics department, including field hockey, cross country, football, soccer, golf, tennis, volleyball, and water polo.
The Manatawny Creek is a major attraction for locals and visitors alike. A tributary of the Schuylkill River, the creek is a prime spot for walking and fishing. Crossing the waterway is the Pleasantville Bridge, a 126-foot-long wooden structure built between 1852 and 1856. It is on the aptly named Covered Bridge Road. The National Register of Historic Places deemed Oley Township, which was settled in 1712, a historic district. The valley's fertile soil attracted immigrants from Germany, France, England and Switzerland. By the time the township government was established in 1740, large sections of township land had been acquired by more than 50 families.
Residents do not have to travel far for shopping and dining. For grocery runs, Weis Markets is a 2-mile drive from home. A local favorite is Clay on Main, a pottery-making shop housed in a 19th-century farmhouse. The establishment holds classes and private parties and even has a café with live music. The Inn on Main is a new eatery located in a century-old space. The menu features American cuisine and is ½ mile away. Residents must drive 15 miles via Pennsylvania Route 662 to Pottstown where there is a Walmart Supercenter.
Oley is home to the Oley Valley Community Fair, typically held in mid-September at the Oley Fairgrounds. In addition to entertainment and food, the fair holds competitions for a wide variety of farm and home products.
There is no public transportation in Oley, so commuters rely on cars. For commuters who work in downtown Reading, the drive can take 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. It’s a 12-mile drive for residents who are heading to Reading Regional-Carl A. Spaatz Field Airport.
