New homes, great schools and abundant shopping destinations define South Elkhorn
When a West Omaha community features five lakes within walking distance of many homes, it’s evident that natural assets are the stars of the neighborhood. South Elkhorn, a popular suburban neighborhood at the western edges of Omaha, offers an abundance of green spaces and lakes that complement its contemporary and traditionally styled homes.
As one of the fastest-growing areas in West Omaha – the population has nearly tripled in the past 20 years – South Elkhorn’s development testifies to its demand for new housing. “When only new will do, buyers love Elkhorn,” says Ryan Renner, Realtor at Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate and a real estate agent for more than five years. While buyers will pay a bit more to live here, the benefits outweigh any drawbacks.

Lakes, parks and more lakes
To understand South Elkhorn, it's important to understand Zorinsky Lake and its namesake park. This lake was built by the city of Omaha to reduce the impact of flooding from the Elkhorn River. After the construction of several dams, lakes such as Zorinsky were born. Today, it serves as the centerpiece of a popular outdoor recreation spot featuring miles of walking trails, fishing and boating. On the lake’s west side, much of the land is preserved to protect local wildlife, making it a great spot to become immersed in nature while on a peaceful walk along the trail. The grounds encompass Bauermeister Prairie, one of the last native tall grass prairies remaining in eastern Nebraska.
While Zorinsky Lake may steal the show for some, pocket parks such as Pacific Pointe Park welcome nearby families to enjoy the playgrounds or let canine friends get some playtime. Whitehawk Park and West Bay Springs Park feature their own smaller, but eye-catching lakes.
