Historic charm paired with modern convenience

One of Philadelphia's most historic neighborhoods, Society Hill balances colonial charm with upscale modern conveniences. “The area is really nice, and it’s sort of quieter here even though we’re so close to Downtown Philly. It really depends which street you’re on,” says Jill Chancellor, reference archivist at the Presbyterian Historical Society. “There’s plenty to do around here too. The events near the river are really popular. And people love hanging out in the hammocks they put up along the water in the spring.”

Colonials and condos

Society Hill features 18th and early 19th-century homes that have been brought back to life thanks to a major restoration project in the 1950s. These colonial-style row houses are paired with original Belgian Block streets, brick sidewalks and gas-lit Franklin street lanterns. The neighborhood also features tall condos just across the street from some of the country's most historic places, such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the Second Bank of the United States. Housing options range in price from $190,000 to $2,625,000. There are about 4,360 homes in the neighborhood and the average number of days on the market for Society Hill is almost twice the national average. Most lots are only a few thousand square feet in size, but homes can range from 700 to 5,500 square feet.
