A neighborhood within walking distance to the local schools
About 23 miles north of Phoenix in the foothills of rolling mountains, the neighborhood of Mountaingate is known as an area where people can feel at ease. “It’s so family-friendly,” says Melissa Gasper, a realtor with Real Broker AZ, LLC, who has more than 100 closed sales in the area. “Kids can walk from the middle school to the Starbucks on the corner, and it feels safe.” Both the highly rated Boulder Creek Elementary School and Mountain Trail Middle School are within walking distance of many homes. The neighborhood has a 2 out of 10 CAP Crime Index score, compared to the national average of 4. Mountaingate ranks much lower than the rest of the country in both violent and property crime.

21st century homes on suburban streets
The neighborhood features clusters of homes from the early 2000s on quiet streets that often lead to cul-de-sacs. Most single-family homes in Mountaingate cost between $500,000 and $800,000, but some new builds with six or more bedrooms can range from $1 million to $3 million. Most homes are large Craftsman or Spanish Mediterranean houses built in the 21st century. Homes themselves are large, but lots tend to be small, so houses are close together. Wide sidewalks allow for exercise and dog walking underneath the blazing Arizona sun. There are scenic views of mountains in the distance but not a lot of greenery because of the desert climate. Most lawns have rock landscaping instead of grass.

The next stop is Mountain Trail Middle School, which has an A-minus rating and is noted by Niche as one of Arizona’s most diverse schools. Plenty of sports at Reach 11 Sports Complex
The Reach 11 Sports Complex is a popular venue for youth athletics in the neighborhood. The complex is home to four baseball fields and 18 soccer fields. All fields are lighted for play when the sun goes down and temperatures drop. The Cave Buttes Recreation Area provides the adventurous with plenty of challenges. The area features over 11 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. There is also an equestrian trail for horseback riders. “There were more trails, but many have been flattened for new construction,” says Gasper. “For now, there’s no plans to disrupt any existing trails.”
There are also plenty of hiking destinations right at your fingertips while living in Mountain Gate.

Brunch at Sunshine Breakfast Bar
Mountaingate is mostly residential, but several restaurants and retail stores sit just south of the neighborhood. Off Cave Creek Road is the Sunshine Breakfast Bar, a hip brunch eatery string lights on the patio and bottomless mimosas. For Italian food and cocktails outdoors, locals visit Upper Crust Pizza, Patio & Wine Bar, which has the red and white checkered tablecloths associated with old Italian joints. For sake and a sushi roll, residents visit 02 Sushi, a vibrant restaurant with bright overhead lights. Residents need to travel outside the neighborhood’s boundaries for groceries, but there are plenty of options to the south. Albertsons, Bashas’ and Fry’s are all national chains that sit along Highway 101. The indoor/outdoor Shops at Norterra mall is 6 miles away and has plenty of boutiques, chain stores and a movie theater.
