A "stable community" near lots of amenities
Sloping roads twine past 19th and 20th-century homes on modest, narrow lots in Windgap, typical of the Pittsburgh area. The neighborhood is known for its affordable housing and prime location 5 miles north of the city and 2 miles from the popular Crafton-Ingram Shopping Center. “It’s a very stable community, and it’s located near a lot of things, including an amazing park with a million-dollar spray area,” says Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith, who represents the area that includes Windgap. Its newly renovated park is a community staple, giving residents access to unique recreational amenities. Because the neighborhood is mainly residential, its streets tend to be quiet, offering residents a taste of low-key suburban living without sacrificing proximity to major amenities.
Post WWII bungalows and interwar period foursquare homes
Small post-World War II bungalows and interwar period foursquares boasting two to three bedrooms dominate Windgap, though raised ranches, Cade Cops, Colonial Revivals and Tudor Revivals are also represented in the neighborhood. Often, homes are clustered by style, with cozy bungalows and Cape Cods lining Haven Street, foursquares with dormers and simplistic Colonial Revivals sitting along Windgap Avenue, and twin homes with brick and vinyl facades occupying Summerdale Street. Most homes cost somewhere between $106,00 and $229,000, though there are a number of fixer-uppers selling for below $100,000.
I-376, Route 51 are nearby
Windgap is near several major roads, including U.S. Interstate Highway 376 and Pennsylvania State Routes 50 and 51, all of which lead to Downtown Pittsburgh, just over 5 miles away via car. For those who don’t drive, public transit is easily accessible in the neighborhood, with public Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses picking up along Ladoga Street, Middletown Road, and Windgap Avenue and dropping off in downtown Pittsburgh and the Crafton-Ingram Shopping Center. Pittsburgh International Airport is also well within reach, sitting about 16 miles northwest of the neighborhood.
Pittsburgh schools emphasize college preparedness
Neighborhood kids may belong to the Pittsburgh Public School District, which includes Pittsburgh Westwood K-5, South Hills Middle School and Pittsburgh Brashear High School, all graded a C or better on Niche. Brashear High School emphasizes college preparation by encouraging every student to take at least one advanced placement class during their high school career.
Shops and restaurants at Crafton-Ingram Shopping Center
Windgap is a residential neighborhood, so for daily shopping and dining needs, residents need to visit nearby communities. Less than 2 miles away, straddling the line between Crafton and Ingram, is the Crafton-Ingram Shopping Center, which houses popular retailers like Giant Eagle, Walgreens and Busy Beaver. The mall also boasts several dining options, including Hanlon’s Café, which serves a mix of cuisines, including a locally named dish, the Duquesne Works Burger.
New splash pad at Chartiers City-Windgap Playground & Spray Park
Located just north of central Windgap is the neighborhood’s primary recreation ground, Chartiers City-Windgap Playground & Spray Park, where residents can watch ball games at the diamond, jog along the snaking paved pathway, twist down slides on the playground or splash around in the newly added kids spray park. The park also boasts lush open fields ideal for picnicking or playing a league soccer or football game.
Community events hosted by the Windgap-Chartiers City Civic Club
Windgap and Chartiers City run a civic club together, which regularly host events like jazz concerts and community days. During community days, residents can pick up sweets at the bake sale, throw around balloons during a balloon toss, and listen to tunes played by local artists. “One of the people who plays music is The Rodger Berber Jazz Quartet, and Rodger is born and raised in Chartiers,” Kail-Smith says.
Crime
Windgap received a crime score of 3 out of 10 on the CAP Index, placing it below the national average of 4.
