Cathedral Park features historic and traditional homes in an artsy setting
At the foot of the iconic St. John’s Bridge along the east shore of the famed Willamette River, Cathedral Park is a historic neighborhood on the north side of Portland. The area was developed around the turn of the 20th century as part of the city of St. Johns, which has since been absorbed into Portland. Mere steps from some of the best urban hiking in America, Cathedral Park offers stunning vistas of the quaint riverside town, its eponymous park and the fir tree-covered hillside that envelops the town. At the center of the neighborhood is the trendy shopping district, home to bars, breweries and amusingly named restaurants such as Urban German Wursthaus and Homegrown Smoker.
Homes range from bungalows and American Foursquares to New Traditional houses and condominiums. Nearby University of Portland lends a quirky vibe to the town, fostering art galleries, music festivals, and pop-up retailers unique to the neighborhood. According to Realtor Darryl Bodle, with Keller Williams Realty Portland Premiere and a Portland real estate agent for 24 years, ”Cathedral Park has grown in popularity over the decades. Its urban, artsy vibe, well-preserved homes, and highly walkable downtown make it unique in North Portland.”

Downtown Cathedral Park offers an array of popular restaurants. Meat lovers appreciate Urban German Wursthaus, while vegans visit Homegrown Smoker. Realtor Bodle adds, “McMenamins St. Johns Theater & Pub is one-of-a-kind. The historic building has been a pub, a theater and an exhibit hall for Lewis and Clark. Today, it’s a well-known movie theater and restaurant featuring regionally regarded MeMenamins’ crafted beers, wines, ciders and farm-raised produce." Shoppers visit quirky Salty Teacup or Hound & Hare Vintage. For groceries, Cathedral Park has a Safeway and a Fred Meyer.
