Historic shopping district

Old Town Chinatown, 1 mile from Downtown Portland, is the oldest neighborhood in Portland and the official Chinatown. Visitors will know they are entering the area through the intricately decorated 1986 Chinatown Gateway done in paifang, a traditional Chinese architectural style. The gateway reminds those entering the area of the Chinese immigrants in who traveled to the West Coast and worked any labor jobs they could find to send money back to their families. By the waterfront, the Japanese American Historical Plaza recognizes the Japanese immigrants who arrived in the early 20th century, also denoting this location as the Japantown Historic District. Old Town Chinatown is rich in history and filled with trendy eateries and retail locations. “China Town in Old Town Portland is mostly commercial office space, bars, nightclubs and some restaurants,” says Cristen Lincoln, principal broker with Living Room Realty. “Very few residences. It’s very urban.”

Voodoo Doughnut and Powell’s City of Books

Old Town Chinatown is home to a variety of popular restaurants like Sushi Ichiban, where meals are delivered via a miniature train, and the infamous Voodoo Doughnut, serving uniquely decorated and flavored donuts. Residents enjoy Deadstock Coffee Roasters, a sneaker-themed coffee shop known for its quality coffee and the signature sneaker print on the latte foam. Republic Café and Ming Lounge serves Chinese cuisine and cocktails. For classic arcade games and a drink with friends, residents visit Ground Kontrol. Goodies Snack Shop offers snacking items ranging from cold brew in a can to ube popcorn. Groceries and other essentials can be found at Old Town Grocery and World Foods. Residents visit Powell’s City of Books for an endless supply of books and visit popular retailers at Pioneer Place.

Condos directly on the waterfront are surrounded by manicured bushes and green spaces with a paved walking path near the water's edge. Those a few blocks behind are next to a narrow roadway with wide sidewalks and dull green lampposts. Condos and townhouses go from $230,000 to $400,000.

People have tents camped out on the sidewalk using drugs out in the open. I've been attacked in broad day light.
