Historic residential district near downtown Raleigh

Developed between the early 1910s and mid-20th century, Five Points East is a historic residential community located 2 miles from downtown Raleigh. “It’s been a desirable neighborhood for decades,” says Lexie Batchelor, a Realtor with Dogwood Properties who has sold several homes in the area. This neighborhood has two historic districts: Roanoke Park and Vanguard Park, which are both defined by rows of vintage homes along tree-lined suburban streets. Homebuyers are drawn to this neighborhood for its well-established character, zoning for highly rated public schools and convenient location near the downtown area.

20th-century homes with character in Five Points East

Despite being only 2 miles from the heart of Raleigh, Five Points East maintains a quiet and somewhat private atmosphere with ample lots, various deciduous trees and low-traffic streets. Craftsman-style bungalows and American Foursquares are abundant throughout the neighborhood, featuring entryway gables and covered front porches. Although most of the properties here date back to the early to mid-20th century, a handful of newer homes – some built as recently as 2023 – showcase more townhouse-style contemporary architecture with attached garages and sleek vinyl exteriors. Older single-family homes can range anywhere from approximately $400,000 to $1.5 million, whereas the modern contemporary-style builds cost upwards of $1 million.

Wake County Schools is a standout district for academics and athletics

Five Points East is zoned for the Wake County Schools district, which receives an overall A rating from Niche and was ranked No. 4 on Niche’s 2025 “Best School Districts in North Carolina” list. The district also earned the distinction of being the No. 1 school district for athletes in the state, according to Niche’s 2025 rankings. Most kindergarten through fifth-grade students here attend the A-rated Underwood Magnet Elementary within walking distance of most homes. However, a couple of the northern blocks are instead zoned for Joyner Magnet Elementary, which is rated A-minus. Neighborhood students are united at Oberlin Magnet Middle and Needham Broughton Magnet High School, both of which also receive A-minus ratings. The high school offers a range of academic experiences through its Global Studies & Language Immersion Magnet, International Baccalaureate program and Academy of Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Marketing.

Numerous outdoor parks and recreation spaces in and around Five Points East put outdoor recreation close by for residents. “You’re never more than a five-minute walk from a great park when you live here,” Batchelor says. Surrounded by family homes in the middle of the neighborhood, Roanoke Park is a community green space with open lawns, a playground and athletic facilities for volleyball and basketball. Just under a mile north of Five Points East is Fallon Park, a 10-acre strip of land with picnic areas and an unpaved walking path stretching the length of the park. Blocks branching from the Glenwood Avenue and Fairview Road intersection are packed with small businesses, local retailers and casual eateries like Third Place Coffee Shop, Lilly’s Pizza and Hayes Barton Café. Along Bickett Boulevard in the neighborhood’s southern end, residents can grab morning pastries from Bright Spot Donuts or dine at Ajja, a brightly themed Mediterranean restaurant.
