Largest intact 19th-century residential neighborhood in the state
One of Raleigh’s longest-standing residential areas, Oakwood is a 19th-century neighborhood full of unique architecture and historic charm. “It’s one of my favorite parts of the city,” says Ryan Sabatini, a Broker with Rich Realty Group who has been selling in the area for three years. “It has a great historical overlay, but it’s also right next to downtown. It’s a great example of the new mixed with the historic.” Homes here are painted in beautiful shades of pastel, with white picket fence-lined front yard gardens. Oakwood also has highly rated schools, an active historic society and a 72-acre cemetery built in 1869 that gives the neighborhood a quiet sense of peace.
There is plenty of classic architecture for all tastes in Oakwood.

Historic homes in every shade
Homes here come in styles including Queen Anne, Victorian and Neoclassical Revivals, all from the mid-to-late 1800s and early 1900s. The Southern variations of these styles often include elaborate latticework and large porches, the latter being a vital addition to mitigate the summer heat in the pre-air conditioning era. Those looking for a more contemporary choice will find plenty of suburban options, like American Vernacular and Foursquare homes. A bungalow built in the 1910s and a 2010s Traditional home will both start at about $500,000 to $600,000. At the high end of the price range, historic estates consisting of three to five bedrooms tend to go for over $1 million. Sabatini notes that in order to maintain the character of the neighborhood, “you might have to get approval from the historic society if you want to make any changes to the homes.”

Strolling through the peaceful Oakwood Cemetery
Sitting on the corner of a residential street, Oakwood Commons Park offers a small fenced-in playscape, picnic tables and chairs. At LeVelle Moton Park, residents can play a pickup game at the public basketball courts or take their kids to the two playgrounds. The neighborhood borders Historic Oakwood Cemetery, a garden-style burial site with more than 70 acres of park-like grounds and an off-leash area for dogs. “It might seem strange because it’s a cemetery, but it’s a really beautiful place to walk through,” Sabatini says. For more than 150 years, the cemetery has served the surrounding community and includes the resting places of seven governors, five U.S. Senators, eight Supreme Court Chief Justices of North Carolina and more. The cemetery also offers historical tours and community events, such as the Plein Air Drawing and Painting monthly meetup.
