There’s more to Detroit’s northern rural area than meets the eye – Richmond Township and its city center bring a splash of life to the countryside and make it a fun place to live. “The city of Richmond offers a lot of things. We have a very active community,” says Susan Foster, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Professionals who has been in the real estate business for over 40 years.
Richmond Township, as a whole, is mostly made up of rolling farmlands and woods with several creeks and streams winding throughout the area. However, its village center Richmond City is thriving with small-town community vibes. What was once a quiet and almost desolate area has started to pick up some steam as more and more people move to the region to enjoy the peace and serenity of country living.
Most homes in Richmond Township are located within or around the town to keep you close to all the action. You can find four squares and ranch-style homes on smaller lots within the gridded streets for anywhere between $180,000 to $250,000. Split-levels, large Craftsmen and Colonials all fall in the price range of $325,000 to $375,000. Some of these properties are brand-new construction and located within a pocket of similarly new houses. Older, historic homes that are Victorian-inspired still dot the streets alongside them. Out in the countryside, large Craftsmen on sizeable farmland properties go for $280,000 to $500,000, depending on the acreage. There are even vacant lots available for anyone interested in building their own home.
Families living within Richmond Township can send their children to Richmond Community Schools for their education. Will L Lee School has a B-plus grade on Niche and serves kindergarten through third grade. From there, students can go to Richmond Middle School for fourth through eighth grade. The school has a B-minus Niche grade and plenty of after-school clubs to participate in. Richmond Community High School is currently ranked No. 11 for Best Public High Schools in Macomb County and boasts a B Niche grade. With a 92% graduation rate, the school can prepare your child for their future.
With Richmond Township’s miles of rural farmland, finding opportunities for outdoor recreation is easy. Hikers and bikers can use the Macomb Orchard Trail, which cuts across the township. The 23.5-mile linear park starts at the Richmond trailhead and goes on to connect to a network of trails throughout Michigan. In the City of Richmond itself, residents visit Beebe Street Memorial Park when they want to stretch their legs. Hit a home run on the baseball fields, spike a volleyball on the court or go skating at one of the seasonal ice rinks. The Richmond Community Center is on the grounds and hosts enrichment classes for residents to enjoy during weeknights. Across the street, Bailey Park offers a couple more sports areas. The space is notable for its history museum section that includes a historic schoolhouse, railroad depot and log cabin that teaches visitors about the town’s past and how it started as “Beebe’s Corners.”
When it comes to shopping, Richmond City’s Main Street has plenty of businesses and retail options to cover your essentials. Peruse the antique stores and boutiques on both sides. For groceries, you can visit Green Thyme Workshop or Weeks’ Meat Market. On days when you’d rather eat out, Ken’s Country Kitchen is a family-run restaurant known in the area for its home-cooked meals and daily soups. If you can’t find what you need in the major Main Street retail area, keep traveling south roughly 1.5 miles until it intersects with Graitiot Road. You’ll find even more commercial businesses, including a CVS pharmacy, auto parts store, Family Farm & Home and several fast-food chains. Make sure to grab a slice of square pizza from the original Buscemis franchise location while you’re there. “You can meet most of your needs within the community, though people will travel elsewhere if they need to,” Foster says.
As more people move to the peaceful countryside of Richmond Township, the community prospers. Foster says, “The neighborhood is growing, and a lot of new people are coming in all the time.”
