Where people know their neighbors
Mary Munford embodies the legacy of the late activist Mary-Cooke Branch Munford, celebrating her focus on community. People here know their neighbors– they run into them while walking dogs or riding bikes with their kids; sometimes, they end up talking for hours. The streets are tree-lined, and some have skinny concrete sidewalks. Architecturally unique homes contrast their neighbors, but they all maintain the same green lawns and tidy landscaping. “People want charm and walkability,” says Brinkley Taliaferro, Realtor with Shaheen Ruth Martin & Fonville and Richmond native. “They don’t care about lot size as much, it’s more about being close to the city’s attractions – like Carytown.”

The Mary Munford Playground and more
The Mary Munford Playground covers over 9 acres of the neighborhood. During school hours, it’s reserved for recess, but after hours, students and residents alike can use the playground, tennis courts, soccer fields and basketball courts. “It’s a great spot that they let the public use,” Taliaferro says. “It’s an awesome place to play tennis, let your dog run around or just get a little patch of green space in the city. Every time I drive by, it’s packed.” About a mile east of Mary Munford is The Museum District, where locals can spend evenings strolling beside classic rowhomes or visit the acclaimed Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, whose outdoor lawn is just as popular as the artwork inside. Residents aren’t too far from the James River either, where lots of Richmonders love spending their weekends. For a more expansive outdoor experience, Byrd Park is about a 3-mile drive, while Maymont – with its petting zoo, Japanese Garden and historic mansion – is about 4 miles away.
Affectionately known as "Merry Funford", this playground is located just next to the elementary.

Mary Munford Elementary School and on
Students are zoned for Richmond Public Schools. They can attend Mary Munford Elementary School, which earns an A-minus from Niche. “A lot of people who have their kids going to Mary Munford like the idea of walking them to school,” Taliaferro explains. The school’s PTA is largely responsible for Mary Munford’s prominent role in the community, planning charity events and raising awareness for neighborhood issues like pedestrian safety. Then, students can attend Albert Hill Middle School and Thomas Jefferson High School, which get B’s.
