A slice of Detroit's golden age lives on in suburban Brooklands Park
Located at the southeast corner of Rochester Hills, the community of Brooklands Park is a living reminder of Metro Detroit’s economic heyday. Its development from the 1930s to 1970s coincided with the Motor City’s industrial golden age, and its vintage homes and middle school, named for iconic labor leader Walter Reuther, tell the story of “American Dream” social mobility. Today, Brooklands Park offers competitive housing prices, proximity to shopping and parks and easy access to the Detroit area’s current manufacturing hubs. These conveniences, together with highly rated schools, keep a glimmer of Detroit’s “Golden Age” alive.

Vintage homes tell the story of the Motor City's midcentury boom
Brooklands Park’s streetscapes offer a snapshot of mid-20th century life. Ranch-style homes and cottages sit behind expansive lawns and along quiet suburban lanes, even though a major highway is just a few blocks away. These homes were largely built from the 1930s to 1970s, with the occasional 21st-century build adding variety to Brooklands Park’s vintage stock. Smaller ranch-style and cottage homes can sell for between $148,000 and $290,000, while split-level and larger properties range in value from $330,000 to $500,000. While Brooklands Park’s streets are easily navigable due to their grid pattern and level terrain, they do lack sidewalks. This neighborhood's plentiful supply of older and smaller houses offers homebuyers competitive prices within a city with an average home price of $475,000.

Swimming and sports at neighboring parks
Though Brooklands Park may not have a park of its own, this neighborhood is surrounded by opportunities for outdoor recreation. Thelma Spencer Park, located at the neighborhood’s southern end, offers activities for every season, from beach volleyball and swimming in the summer to ice skating in the winter. To the north of Brooklands Park, even more recreation options await. “Borden Park provides a variety of recreational opportunities catering to diverse audiences," says Nathan Mueller, senior adviser for strategy and communications for the City of Rochester Hills. This park's offerings include four baseball diamonds, basketball and pickleball courts, several soccer fields and roller hockey rinks. “No one does parks quite like us, and we are committed to doing even more,” Mueller says.

Small businesses and a large shopping center line Auburn Road
Auburn Road cuts through the heart of Brooklands Park and doubles as its main thoroughfare and its retail lifeline. Johnny Blacks Public House is much more than the local pub; its vibrant sports bar atmosphere is accompanied by classic gastropub fare like fish and chips, burgers and tacos. Brain Freeze, another community gathering place, is known to attract long lines in the evening, with its seasonal swirls adding variety to a menu already full of diverse flavors. Along Auburn Road, and at the ends of this neighborhood, are small shopping plazas with additional restaurant options including Ping’s, the local Chinese takeout spot, and the local sub shop. Just 2 miles down that same road, the Hampton Village Centre hosts major retailers like Meijer, Target and Kohl’s, covering everyday essentials.
