Trendy, walkable living in central St. Louis
With bars and restaurants lining Manchester Avenue, Forest Park Southeast is known for its buzzy nightlife and proximity to locally owned dining. "Most locals here call that whole area The Grove, even though it's technically called Forest Park Southeast," says Jessica Lefan, a local resident and real estate agent with Compass Realty Group. This nickname refers to both the groovy nightlife district that cuts through the neighborhood's center and the sprawling greenspace of Forest Park located right next door. "Our favorite thing about the neighborhood is its walkability," Lefan says. Most homes are within a few blocks of nightly live music, craft beer and renowned eateries, along with several of the region's top hospitals. Forest Park, the largest park in the city, is right next to the neighborhood and the Missouri Botanical Garden is just a mile south. Dating back to 1876, Forest Park Southeast offers a lively atmosphere and convenient access to downtown less than 4 miles away.
Vibrant shopping and dining on Manchester Avenue
The nearly 1 mile stretch of bars and restaurants along Manchester Avenue offers an array of experiences. Hello Juice & Smoothie serves freshly pressed juices and acai, while Everest Café and Bar has a tikka masala that St. Louis Magazine ranks among the best in the city. On the other end of the street, Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. passes out German-style beers and four-cheese pizzas. Local groceries are also available at City Greens Market or DITALIA Fine Italian Imports, and Schnucks supermarket is less than 2 miles north on Lindell Boulevard. Those looking for nightlife can gather at watering holes like Prism, Rehab or HandleBar, which hosts the World Naked Bike Race every July. Residents can expect plenty of commotion and noise, with The Grove’s bars slinging drinks well past midnight and DJs blasting music during the district’s frequent street festivals.

Hundred-year-old homes in St. Louis
Forest Park Southeast is a happening place nowadays, but this was a different story just over a decade ago. Most of the neighborhood's neglected and vacant homes have been torn down or remodeled, leading the way for new construction and apartment buildings. Older homes were built as early as 1900 and offer prices ranging from $100,000 to $250,000. Renovated and newly built homes from the early 2000s can also be found in the neighborhood. Some preserve the red brick facades and Classical Revival designs from their earlier construction, while others have taken on modern designs. Renovated properties tend to sell from about $300,000 to $500,000. "Thanks to its location between two medical campuses, Forest Park Southeast attracts a lot of medical professionals, but these aren’t the only buyers heading to the community," says Jeff Uren, an agent with Worth Clark Realty. Forest Park Southeast receives an 8 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, which is twice the national average. This score is driven by high property crime, with a 10 out 10 for larceny.

Heading outdoors in Forest Park Southeast
Choteau Park is the closest green space to the neighborhood. Located in its north side, this 3-acre postage stamp of greenery offers a dog park, basketball court and a playground with floating steps. Just across Interstate 64, Forest Park offers 1,300 acres of golf courses, tennis courts, and even a zoo. Within the park, the Missouri History Museum, St. Louis Art Museum and McDonnell Planetarium are all free and open to the public. Uren says a few bridges over the highway make it possible to cross into the park on foot – or, more typically, on a bike. “Most people living there and utilizing Forest Park are biking, because Forest Park is so massive.” Just a mile to the south, the Missouri Botanical Garden has a greenhouse dome, several ponds and manicured areas like the Victorian and Japanese gardens spread over 79 acres.

Grooving at events in The Grove
Grovefest is a street festival that comes to Forest Park Southeast every October for an evening of live music. Manchester Avenue is closed, and large crowds come out to enjoy street performers and food vendors while musicians play on the event stage. Another popular event is the Flyover Comedy Festival, which takes place in several of the area's bars over three days in November. Amongst big-name comedians like Patton Oswalt and Tig Notaro, the festival gives an opportunity for local talent to get stage time and for residents to enjoy high-level comedy just steps from their homes. "We've been going for three or four years now; it's a great time," Lefan says.

With Interstate 64 passing just north of Forest Park Southeast, the 4-mile commute into downtown St. Louis takes less than 10 minutes. "St. Louis is known as a commuter city, so most people here drive," says Lefan. She explains that the Cortex Metrolink train station is less than a mile north of the neighborhood and bus stops are located right on Manchester Avenue, but service can be infrequent. In the case of a medical emergency, several medical centers are less than a mile away. St. Louis University Hospital is just east of the neighborhood, while St. Louis Children's Hospital and Barnes-Jewish Hospital are directly north. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is the largest hospital in Missouri and the largest private employer in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
