Rare flowers and koi ponds 5 miles from Downtown St. Louis

In the Missouri Botanical Gardens, lily pads float on a placid pond in front of a domed conservatory, colorful glass sculptures by famed artist Dale Chihuly rival the blooming flowers and visitors take meditative walks across the Zig Zag bridge. The Botanical Gardens, which also connect to Tower Grove Park, are located about 5 miles outside Downtown St. Louis in a neighborhood known as Southwest Garden. Here, streets are lined with historic brick townhomes, bungalows and condominium communities. Restaurants, bars and drug stores are a walk — or a bike ride — away for most residents, and some family businesses like Urzi’s Italian Market have been in operation for nearly a century. Neighbors stop to chat while shopping for imported parmesan or waiting at the deli counter, and game nights are spent nursing a Guinness at O’Connell’s Pub. Driving along Shaw Boulevard, it’s hard not to spot Gringo Jones Imports and its sculpture-packed front yard. Simply put, Southwest Garden is an eclectic mix of rare flower species from around the world, cozy family pasta joints and brick buildings with storied pasts.

Century-old brick bungalows and investment properties

In Southwest Garden, homes date back to the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. Lot sizes are on the smaller side, hovering at an average of 5,600 square feet; sitting out on the front stoop often means chatting with next-door neighbors. Single-family brick bungalows are a dominant style in the neighborhood, often starting in the mid $300,000s. Modest shotgun homes are sometimes listed for less than $200,000 and fully renovated properties can sell for well over $500,000. According to Mary Krummenacher, a team leader at RE/MAX Results, “It's a pretty attractive neighborhood for those who are coming from the coast and love the vibe of the city but want something modern.” There are several multi-family investment opportunities available throughout, and it’s not uncommon to see brick or stone mason architecture in various stages of renovation. “You'll see classic 1900s architecture but with primary suites, walk-in closets, open concepts and exposed bricks,” explains Krummenacher. Along with single-family homes, prospective buyers will also find one-bedroom condominium units for around $150,000 and pre-World War II townhomes for just under $300,000. Cars park in back alleyways, but there’s also an abundance of street parking beneath century-old trees.

The Missouri Botanical Gardens and a busy events calendar in Tower Grove Park

Once part of Henry Shaw’s estate, the Missouri Botanical Gardens is home to more than 27,000 plants on permanent display. Visit the Climatron, a temperature-controlled glass dome that stands 70 feet tall and spans 175 feet wide. There’s also a Japanese garden, where small islands are connected by footbridges. Visitors can also stop by the Stephen and Peter Sachs Museum, which served as the garden’s library in 1859. Tickets are $16, but members enjoy free admission along with access to a speaker series. Before exploring the 80 acres of landscaped trails, labyrinths and bridges, stop by Sassafras Cafe for brunch. Directly south is Tower Grove Park, where pavilions date back over 100 years and softball diamonds host local leagues. There’s also a busy events calendar, and the park sponsors a free spring lecture series in the Stupp Center, a pop-up cocktail experience during the holiday season and parties on the Piper Palm House patio. The 289-acre park is also home to a Saturday morning farmers’ market from April through November and a Tuesday night market from early May until late September.

Family-owned Italian restaurants and small coffee shops

Along with its temperature-controlled greenhouses and rare orchids, Southwest Garden is known for its Italian food. The Cunetto family opened Cunetto House of Pasta in 1972, and it’s still going strong on Magnolia Avenue today, serving up fresh-made ravioli, tortellini and linguini in a homey sit-down environment. Favazza’s on the Hill is another St. Louis area staple, known for dishes like homemade lasagna and veal saltimbocca. Start off the day with a pastry at Mountain House Cafe, Park Avenue Coffee or World’s Fair Donuts before heading to Schnucks Arsenal for a quick grocery run. According to Krummenacher, the neighborhood has seen the rise of new businesses in recent years. "You’re finding corner stores are popping up, along with restaurants, bars and ice cream shops, which really solidifies it as a neighborhood, she says.

The St. Louis Zoo, art museum and science center in Forest Park

Although Tower Grove Park, the Botanical Gardens and Sublette Park off Arsenal Street offer plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities in the neighborhood itself, residents can also drive the few miles north to Forest Park. The 1,300-acre expanse is home to the St. Louis Zoo and St. Louis Art Museum, where visitors can see works by famed artists like Monet and Picasso. There’s also the St. Louis Science Center, which has an OMNIMAX immersive theater and planetarium. Of course, there are always more opportunities Downtown: watch the St. Louis Blues play at Enterprise Center, climb through interactive exhibits at the City Museum and, of course, take the elevator to the top of the Gateway Arch.
