A scrappy St. Pete neighborhood in transformation
Sitting on the southern end of St. Petersburg’s peninsula, Harbordale is a small but scrappy, tight-knit community on the rise. The primarily residential neighborhood has weathered the winds of change throughout its 100-year-history. Since 1924, it’s gone from a once-thriving epicenter for African American-owned small businesses along its main corridor to a blighted community from city neglect, pool water quality from Salt Creek, homelessness and the impact of the construction of Interstate 175, which divides the northern and southern half of St. Pete. Despite its challenges, historic homes and landmarks still stand, city grants have been awarded, and the community is more driven than ever to see the place they call home returned to its former glory. “It’s still a transitioning neighborhood, but our little neighborhood has gotten much better in the last five years,” says Jennifer Wolfe, Secretary of the Harbordale Neighborhood Association and five-year resident. “The city’s been doing a lot of infrastructure [projects], and they’ve been replacing waterlines, so that’s helping.”
Originally from the Midwest, Wolfe bought her Harbordale home right before the pandemic after visiting friends who lived there. She now splits her time between here and her home in Chicago. “I wanted a place to spend the winters, and I really enjoyed the warm weather; that’s what drew me here,” she says. “I thought it was a glorious place. It wasn’t crowded, and it was very open-minded.” Surrounded by bayous, a lake and mangrove-protected nature preserves, the primarily residential neighborhood has a variety of outdoor recreation. Residents are also close to amenities. Downtown is less than 3 miles away, and I-275 is 3 miles west, connecting residents to Tampa and the entire area. “It’s super convenient to everything; it’s south of downtown and five blocks from the water,” says Wolfe. “It’s a very easy community to be in.”
Surrounded by water activities, nature preserves and Lake Maggiore
Boating and deep-sea fishing are popular activities in Harbordale, which is surrounded by Big Bayou and Little Bayou. Both waterways feed into Tampa Bay. Boaters and anglers can also enjoy Harborage Marina, less than 2 miles northeast, which offers small boat and yacht storage, a tiki bar, a restaurant and boat slips. Poynter Park is close to the marina and is a local favorite with waterfront views, a recreation trail and picnic space. The 133-acre Bartlett Park, directly north of Harbordale, has a playground, fishing spots along Salt Creek and dozens of football, baseball and soccer fields. The park also has shaded walking paths, shuffleboard, a tennis center, and the Frank Pierce Recreation Center, which organizes after-school programs, sports leagues and youth events. South Shore Park is less than a mile away, or a 3-minute bike ride and sits along Big Bayou. It’s a small park hidden in a neighborhood but offers fishing spots, benches and a boat launch. The 14-acre Lassing Park is one of the city’s most popular spaces for windsurfing and kayaking. On the shores of Tampa Bay, the park offers a small sandy beach area, fishing spots and picnic space. “It’s five blocks away and very peaceful,” says Wolfe. “There’s not a lot of people, and the horseshoe shape makes it so you can see the curvature of the pier and the city from the park.” Lake Maggiore hugs the southwestern side of Harbordale and offers 360 acres of recreation. Several parks on the lake’s shores have fishing piers, boat launches, trails and a driving range. On the lake’s southern side, the 245-acre Boyd Hill Nature Preserve offers heavily forested hiking trails and camping spots.
Bungalows and coastal cottages dating to the 1920s
According to Niche, Harbordale is among the Top 10 neighborhoods in St. Petersburg for the lowest cost of living. Palms and age-old oaks covered in Spanish moss line its quiet streets. The neighborhood is filled with historic Florida-style bungalows, two-story coastal cottages and a few modern builds. “I’m seeing more and more developers buying up empty lots in Harbordale and building new homes,” says Helle Hartley, a Realtor at Century 21 Jim White & Associates, with over 275 closed sales in St. Petersburg. Most homes were built in the 1940s and ‘50s, but some date back to the ‘20s. Prices range from the mid-$200,000s for a 1,000-square-foot three-bedroom to the high-$500,000s for a renovated 2,200-square-foot four-bedroom. “It’s not as affordable as it was; most properties are $300,000s or more, or they're a total fixer-upper,” says Wolfe, who bought a foreclosed home and has been fixing it up for the past four years. Some cottages have been renovated into bigger multi-family duplexes, creating investment opportunities. Most homes have carports or alley-facing garages, screened-in porches and covered patios. Lot sizes are small, with an average of around 6,500 square feet, and many homes have hibiscus and fruit trees. Residents are within biking distance of Barlett Park, Harbordale Park, Salt Creek, public transit and a grocery store.
Close to mom and pops and a historically significant service station
Locally owned restaurants, coffee shops and grocery stores line Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, a busy commercial artery along the neighborhood’s western edge. Mair’s Grocery is a local favorite for basics and West Indian specialties like curry goat, jerk chicken and oxtail. Across the street, The Meat House of St. Pete and Rajax Food and Meat Mart provide groceries, prime cuts of beef and pork and seasonal items. The Chattaway is a 1930s-themed American eatery known for its burgers, seafood platters and other comfort foods. The retro diner also has a tearoom. One-Eyed Kellee’s is a classic Florida dive bar with a small back patio. Tchotchke is a brunch and lunch spot located in Bayou Shores directly south, known for its housemade biscuits, shrimp and grits and other comfort foods. The Big Catch at Salt Creek offers waterfront dining atop Harborage Marina, less than 2 miles away. The restaurant is known for its peel-and-eat shrimp, blackened fish sandwiches and frozen tropical drinks. “There’s also Mullet’s Fish Camp in St. Pete that’s wonderful,” says Wolfe. “My favorite taco place is in south St. Pete, called Nueva Cantina. They have the best margaritas, they’re really friendly, and it’s not overpriced.” Anchored by Publix, University Village is less than 2 miles north and offers Bank of America, a hair salon and other small retailers. St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District, home to locally owned shops and restaurants, is 3 miles north, and Downtown St. Petersburg is less than 3 miles away for more shopping and dining. Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Rays Major League Baseball team, is also downtown. A historic service station sits among the few pieces of Harbordale’s past that will soon have new life. “It’s only one of two in the whole country,” says Wolfe. “It’s a little gem in our neighborhood, and the owner is using the bricks used in its original design.” Owner Robert Blackmon plans to turn the former one-gas pump Standard Oil service station into Pete’s Bagels, which has another shop in the Grand Central District. The service station opened in 1926 and earned a local landmark designation in 2023. Blackmon plans to open sometime in late 2024.
Home to the top school district in the Tampa area
Pinellas County Schools serves the area and is ranked the No. 1 school district in Tampa, according to Niche. Students can attend Campbell Park Elementary, which offers a student news program and has a C-minus on Niche, followed by Bay Point Middle, which earns a B-minus. Kids can finish their primary education at Lakewood High School, which scores a B-plus on Niche and offers tennis and track teams and a performing arts club.
Neighborhood association driven to unite and empower its community
Harbordale Neighborhood Association keeps community residents engaged and close. The volunteer group hosts regular cleanups at Boyd Hill Preserve and Bartlett Park, along with tree plantings, an annual holiday party at the Islamic Center and backyard porch parties. “People need to gather together to meet their neighbors and grow as friends,” says Wolfe. “We want to bridge the gap between people of different cultures and religions.” Wolfe and the rest of the members are also helping spearhead initiatives to better the community and improve residents’ lives. “The neighborhood association works hard to advocate for our neighbors,” she says. “We give information to residents on beautifying their homes, we have a park with new equipment, and we’re trying to get more trees in Harbordale; we need shade streets desperately.” Harbordale has applied for a $10,000 tree grant from the city, and if awarded, the tree planting will occur in October and November 2024. The neighborhood has also received grants for more community outreach and events.
Less than 3 miles from Downtown St. Pete
Harbordale is less than 3 miles east of Interstate 275, which connects to the Howard Frankland Bridge, providing access to the rest of the area. Downtown St. Petersburg is less than 3 miles north, St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is 15 miles away and Tampa is a 25-mile drive. Public transportation is available via Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, with bus stops along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street South and 4th Street. Kindred Hospital Bay Area – St. Petersburg is along 4th Street, less than 1 mile away.
