Palmetto Park, a cozy neighborhood with a strong sense of community, continues its growth as a cultural destination at the forefront of the St. Petersburg art scene.
In the spirit of creativity and craftsmanship, many of Palmetto Park’s homes are remodels that were given new life amid the community’s 21st-century revitalization. Along the neighborhood streets are a collection of quirky single-family homes of varying shapes and sizes incorporating a variety of architectural styles. Homes here tend to stay on the market for about a month and typically sell for between $350,000 to $650,000. Residents are served by one of the oldest and most continuously active neighborhood associations in the city. Monthly meetings, community cleanups and holiday parties are the norm here, and nowhere is the neighborhood’s sense of togetherness more apparent than in the community garden. Located in the heart of Palmetto Park, it’s open to all residents and neighboring communities, with volunteers tending to the growing plot daily.
Pinellas County Schools serves the neighborhood’s students. Kids may start at Fairmount Park Elementary School, which gets a C grade from Niche, before transitioning to John Hopkins Middle School, which also has a C. Students may then attend Gibbs High School with a B grade, which serves as the school district’s Arts, Business, Economics, and Technology Academies.
Directly south of the Grand Central District, the commercial and creative center of the city’s art scene, Palmetto Park fits right in as home to the Warehouse Arts District and an array of independent shops. The highlight of the Warehouse Arts District is the ArtsXchange, 20,000 square feet of air-conditioned, affordable art studios that feature a 1,600-square-foot gallery and a 1,000-square-foot second-floor gallery/classroom. Tenants include photographers, painters, graphic artists, metal artists and more. Fairgrounds St. Pete is another neighborhood arts destination. Exhibits, community events and workshops are part of its immersive experience that showcases the intersection of art and innovation. Art is always around the corner in Palmetto Park. In addition to the art shops, many of which are stops on the monthly Saturday ArtWalk, the neighborhood also features large, colorful murals painted during the city’s annual SHINE Festival. Conveniently located, attractions such as Tropicana Park, home of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Imagine Museum and downtown St. Petersburg are nearby, as well as the bars and restaurants that populate the neighboring Grand Central District.
Palmetto Park is in the center of the neighborhood and offers a playground and shaded benches. The Pinellas Bike Trail, which encompasses 38 miles from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs, runs through the entire neighborhood. There’s also the YMCA off 1st Avenue with an indoor pool, sports courts and learning spaces.
Residents can find a ton of local retailers and restaurants along Central Avenue at the north end of Palmetto Park. Go shopping at Lion's Paw Antiques & Collectables or Sunshine City Popcorn Co. and finish up the night by dining at Urban Brew and BBQ or Casita Taqueria. Nearby, there’s also a Walmart Supercenter for essential groceries and a Walgreens for prescriptions.
Plenty of amenities are bikeable and walkable from Palmetto Park. Grand Central Bus Terminal sits along Central Avenue and serves as the public transportation hub for the area. Car travel throughout the city and to neighboring Tampa is made easy by Interstate 275, which borders much of the neighborhood.
Interstate 275 runs alongside Palmetto Park, so there may be some additional ambient traffic noise. There’s also industrial zoning at the south end of the neighborhood near the interstate.
