Suburban Neighborhood in Salem, Oregon
Marion County 97301
Located less than 3 miles from the hustle and bustle of Salem's downtown district, Northeast Salem is where you’ll find a mix of suburban homes, apartment buildings and commercial destinations with an easy commute to nearby job centers, cultural attractions and the Oregon State Capitol.
Take a stroll through the neighborhood's residential streets and you’ll see a range of mid-century home styles from pastel-colored cottages to cozy brick ranch homes. Homes here are typically one-story tall with between two and four bedrooms and manicured front lawns. With wide streets, sidewalks, quiet cul-de-sacs and mature trees, it’s got a classic suburban feel that residents love. Prices typically range from $250,000 to $450,000 depending on the size and age of the home. As you get closer to the neighborhood’s commercial corridors, you’ll also see some low-rise apartment and condo complexes, some of which feature pools and other on-site amenities.
Northeast Salem is also home to the Oregon State Hospital, a public psychiatric hospital that is notable for being the oldest operating psychiatric hospital in the state. It was also the main filming location for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” an award-winning 1975 film that starred Jack Nicholson.
For shopping and groceries, head over to Willamette Town Center where you can shop at big box stores like Target, Best Buy and Hobby Lobby, or catch the latest Hollywood flick at the Regal Willamette movie theater. Head north and you’ll find grocery stores like Fred Meyer and La Tapatia Supermarket, a regional grocery chain that specializes in Mexican products. There are plenty of casual and fast-food dining options in the area, like Nagoya Japanese Steak House & Sushi, KKOKI Korean BBQ and Geppetto’s, a family-style Italian eatery where you can pick up a pie to-go or grab a table. Head west to downtown Salem and you’ll have plenty of options for upscale dining, boutique shops and cultural landmarks like the Hallie Ford Museum of Art.
Neighborhood parks are a major perk for Northeast Salem residents. On a sunny afternoon, you can take the kids to Geer Community Park, a lovely 44-acre park with leafy trees, baseball fields, soccer fields, picnic tables and winding walking paths that are perfect for a morning jog. You can also take advantage of Hoover Park, a small greenspace with a playground, picnic shelter and sport courts that backs up to Hoover Elementary School. If you’re looking for a scenic daytrip, take a drive through the countryside to Silver Falls State Park. This beloved wilderness is where you’ll find a maze of hiking trails, forested groves and rocky waterfalls.
Students can attend Hoover Elementary School, Parrish Middle School and North Salem High School, an historic schoolhouse established in 1906. North Salem High’s music and performing arts programs are known for their excellence, including being nationally recognized multiple times as a “Grammy Signature School,” which provides grant funding to music programs.
Northeast Salem is located along Interstate 5, making for an easy commute around the region. Hop on the highway and you can get quickly around the area, whether you’re heading to pastoral Willamette Valley wineries, north to Portland or south to Eugene.
