The original town of Salida was formed in the 1870s, where the Central Pacific Railroad ended at the Salida station in Stanislaus County's northern reaches. Downtown Salida occupies the layout of early Salida. Spanish translations, including "exit" and "gateway," fit today's Salida, a departure point out of the north side of the city of Modesto. The Stanislaus River flows out into the rest of the valley from this area, a gateway into adjacent farmland.

Salida and Modesto are linked as neighbors sharing resources and an agricultural heritage. "It's a community that has its roots in farming.
