Sherwood Gardens blends affordability with proximity, so residents can take in the shops and sites of downtown Salinas without the pricier housing, while having access to other Californian towns via US Route 101 or the regional bus system. “If homebuyers are looking for flexibility or to be able drive in any direction, Sherwood Gardens a good central place to be,” says Realtor Eddie Guajardo, who has been selling real estate in the area for almost two decades. “And the highways are easily accessible.” But there is still much to enjoy within Sherwood Gardens, including the local sport complex’s multi-day rodeo, the largest in the state of California. The most typical home designs here are ranch-style dwellings that seamlessly blend in with the desert-like scenery.

An affordable home on the ranch
Beige and pastel-colored ranch-style homes predominate in Sherwood Gardens, mimicking their arid Californian surroundings, though there are occasional split-levels as well. In the north-central section of the neighborhood, there’s a mobile home park. The median home price is $595,000, with most selling for between $375,000 and $675,000. This last detail is crucial, for while downtown Salinas has a similar median price, homebuyers don’t find as many houses below $500,000 there.

Rodeos, monster trucks and more
For a few days each summer, Sherwood Gardens becomes the cowpoke capital of California when the California Rodeo Salinas comes to town. The Salinas Sports Complex is flooded with visitors from around the world eager to watch bull riders and steer wrestlers, visit the rodeo carnival and witness the crowning of Miss California Rodeo Salinas. The event is the single largest rodeo in the state and of high economic and cultural significance to the community. “We call it ‘Big Week,’” Guajardo says. “It feeds Salinas.” Beyond the rodeo, the Salinas Sports Complex also hosts monster truck jams, motocross competitions and more. Sherwood Hall is the next most popular venue in the neighborhood, hosting theatrical plays and musical performances. The Youth Orchestra Salinas, a free program teaching classical music to hundreds of area kids, holds regular concerts there.
