Silver Oaks is a community-driven San Antonio suburb

In the far northwest outskirts of San Antonio, Silver Oaks is a steadily growing subdivision characterized by regular community events and quiet living. The neighborhood is close to several outdoor areas, including everything from small local parks to the sprawling Government Canyon State Natural Area, which is farther northwest. Major thoroughfares like the Loop 1604 are also convenient for commuters living there. Downtown San Antonio is approximately 23 miles away, while the Lackland Air Force Base – one of the city’s most prominent military employers – is a 15-mile drive south. Silver Oaks has an overall CAP Index crime score of 3 out of 10, just under the national average of 4.

Homes built throughout the 21st century

The median build year of homes in Silver Oaks is 2008, but development has continued on into the 2020s, creating a wide variety of home styles and pricing. Most single-family homes range from approximately $250,000 to $450,000, but some brand-new, larger homes built after 2022 might range from $500,000 to over $800,000. Common architectural styles in this neighborhood include contemporary Craftsman homes – typically seen on the more recently built properties – and New Traditionals with a mix of stone and brick facades complemented by steep gabled roofs. Properties in Silver Oaks also come with wide paved driveways and attached garages, although residents can also park on the neighborhood streets.

Community parks connected by walking trails

Silver Oaks Community Park is a sizeable outdoor space with a children’s playground at the heart of the neighborhood. Residents often use the park to host local events and activities, including National Night Out, a nationwide event in August that supports community building. Surrounding neighborhoods like Stillwater Ranch and Bricewood also have community parks and recreation areas. The Stillwater Ranch Trail System links several of the parks in the area. “San Antonio has done a great job of connecting their parks, and there are a lot of community parks in this area,” says Jo-Ann Guevara, a local real estate agent with Collective Realty. Directly northwest of Silver Oaks is the Government Canyon State Natural Area, which spans 12,000 acres of land and a trail network over 40 miles long that people can use for hiking and biking.

Sotomayor High School opened in 2022

The Silver Oaks neighborhood is zoned for the Northside Independent School District, which receives an overall B-plus rating from Niche. Prekindergarten through fifth-grade students can kickstart their education at Kay Franklin Elementary before heading to John W. Folks Middle. Both schools also receive B-plus ratings and are within walking distance of residents. Secondary school students are served by the brand new Sonia Sotomayor High School, a state-of-the-art institution that opened its doors in Fall 2022 and is rated 8 out of 10 by Great Schools. High school students can enroll in career and technical education programs or advanced academic programs like Advanced Placement courses or dual credit pathways in conjunction with the nearby Northwest Vista College, a local community college. Sotomayor High School also offers On Ramps, a program where students can earn college credit from the University of Texas at Austin.

Convenient San Antonio outlets and chain restaurants

At the corner of Silver Oaks is a small shopping and dining area with a Walmart Neighborhood Market where residents can shop for basic groceries and household items. A mix of regional and national chain restaurants can be found nearby, up and down Galm Road, which borders the neighborhood. “San Antonio is doing outlet setups right now all over the city, so malls are not the big thing here anymore,” Guevara says. “Everywhere you go, it’s mostly the same stores. The remaining malls are about 15 to 20 minutes away.” Several convenience stores like Circle K and Walgreens also dot the roads surrounding the neighborhood.

Silver Oaks community events and the nearby SeaWorld

The Silver Oaks Homeowners Association throws together a number of community events throughout the year. Some, like Easter in the Park and Holiday Movie Nights, are centered around calendar holidays, while others – like the Community Garage Sales – are put together by residents and take place on a more frequent basis. The Silver Oaks Community Park is a popular spot for many of the neighborhood’s events, particularly those outside during the warmer months. Other nearby popular events and attractions include the Lights Alive celebration hosted during the winter holiday season and SeaWorld San Antonio, an aquatic-themed amusement park only 6 miles south of Silver Oaks.

Access to San Antonio’s Loop 1604 beltway

Silver Oaks residents have easy access to Loop 1604, a large beltway that encircles the greater San Antonio metropolitan area. A few miles south of the neighborhood, Loop 1604 merges with Highway 151, also known as the Raymond E. Stotzer Junior Freeway, another arterial thoroughfare people can take to get to downtown San Antonio. Silver Oaks is a car-dependent neighborhood, and no immediate public transit services are available within walking distance. San Antonio International Airport is a 22-mile drive east of the neighborhood and offers regular domestic and international flights to major cities and other airport hubs. Westover Hills Baptist Hospital is just over 5 miles away and offers 24-hour emergency services.
