Peaceful residential enclave in the southern hills of San Francisco
Within a small pocket of southwest San Francisco, where the sounds of the bustling city fade into peaceful hilly streetscapes backed by sweeping Pacific Ocean views, is Monterey Heights. “Monterey Heights is an upscale, quiet and all-residential neighborhood, with windy, sometimes foggy weather and wavy streets that follow the curves of the hills,” says David Lytle, a longtime San Francisco resident and former 7x7 Bay Area Magazine editor who currently works for Visit California. “The homes here are all pretty stately, but they're not quite as tony as the mansions in St. Francis Wood, and many are older and more charming than the ones in Sherwood Forest." Only five miles from downtown, the neighborhood offers a residential retreat packed with conveniences, from access to popular recreational sites like Mount Davidson Park to quick proximity to main highways, public transportation and local shopping and dining. With friendly neighbors and an active homeowners association that amps up the neighborhood’s social calendar, Monterey Heights is where residents can find a strong sense of community amongst a more relaxed residential setting within the city's southern hills.

Diverse housing along winding streets
The neighborhood’s winding streets are lined with narrow sidewalks and single-family homes, often featuring small front lawns with vibrant greenery from boxwoods to succulents. Homes here were primarily built in the 20th century and showcase a wide mix of architecture, including Mediterranean and Tudor Revivals highlighted with arches, turrets and clay-tile roofs. Other common housing styles include Spanish Colonials and mid-century modern homes. Although a few streets have attached row houses, most homes here are detached and include garages or driveways for off-street parking. Housing prices typically range from $1.4 million for smaller, 1,500-square-foot homes on tighter lots and up to $3.2 million for larger, renovated properties with backyard views of the Pacific Ocean. The neighborhood also has a CAP crime index score of 2 out of 10, which is lower than both the city and national averages.
