Comfortable, small-town living in New York

Rotterdam is a place where residents can put down roots, just 16 miles north of Albany. Even though it's one of the largest municipalities of Schenectady County, Rotterdam still has a small-town sensibility. Heidi Rotter, a Real Estate Broker and Owner of Brass Tacs Real Estate Company was born and raised in Rotterdam and says she's raising children here. For her, it's deeper than business. "It's comfort. It's comfortable. My neighbors are great. It's a small town, so it's good to know as many people as possible so you can grow as a community,” Rotter says. Commuters have convenient access to major employers in Albany like the University of Albany and Albany Memorial Hospital. Another large employer that’s more central to the area is the Rivers Casino and Resort.

Bungalows with staired porches

Home prices start in the S100,000 to $280,000 range, according to Rotter. These smaller homes are typically Cape Cod and bungalow styles with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There's also a market for larger builds, such as new ranch-style and traditional homes that fall between $300,000 and $600,000. No matter the price, houses have modest porches and wooded backyards.

From Little League to skiing

Baseball has deep roots in Rotterdam, and it begins with the community's children. Residents gather to watch Little Leaguers slug it out at Carman Park on the east side of town. The park also has a playground for the little ones not interested in the sport. Kiwanis International Park – Rotterdam offers scenic views of the Mohawk River, where neighbors can relax amongst one another. The Briar Creek Golf Course is open to the public, with an 18-hole course and a restaurant. During the colder months, residents visit Maple Ski Ridge for a 138-acre area that brings in thousands of people during the season.

Getting dinner on Congress Street

Residents visit Jasmine Thai Restaurant on Broadway for its artfully plated traditional Thai dishes and drinks. For Italian nostalgia, people dine in at Ferrari's Ristorante on Congress Street. Veal dishes are popular at this family-run spot with lovely murals of old Italy and family photographs along the walls. At Hannaford Plaza, a Hannaford supermarket provides daily essentials alongside the retail center's chain restaurants and stores like Hobby Lobby and Trader Joe’s.
