A golf community with mountain views in North Scottsdale

While Legend Trail is best known for its public golf course, residents are drawn to this North Scottsdale community for its strong social scene and natural beauty. “North Scottsdale is the jewel of Scottsdale,” says Laura Pentecost, broker and team lead at 5 Star Property Brokers at Homesmart who’s sold homes here for 27 years. “North Scottsdale is higher in elevation, so you get the mountain views during the day and at sunset, then when nightfall hits, the entire horizon sparkles with city lights. Then there’s the difference in temperature. It’s five degrees cooler on average in this part of Scottsdale.” Many homes here back up to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a popular hiking area with views of the surrounding desert and McDowell Mountains, and the Legend Trail Golf Club, a public course designed by Rees Jones, is spread throughout the community. “Legend Trail is unique in that you don’t have to pay $200,000 for a golf membership to live here, but you have the same community atmosphere,” says Connie Edelman, who lives here and is an associate broker with Compass. Cave Creek and Carefree are within 6 miles and have a variety of shopping and dining options, and nearby houses of worship include Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church and Christ the Lord Lutheran Church. The neighborhood’s east side has a gated entry, which contributes to the overall CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Although Loop 101, the nearest freeway, is 13 miles south, Edelman says, “Everybody thinks it’s far out, but when people come here and visit, they want to be up here because you don’t ever have to leave.”

Homes backing up to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve

The neighborhood’s Pueblo Revival-style and Mediterranean-style homes sit along the golf course’s green fairways and have views of the surrounding mountains. While many homes back up to the course and have backyard pools to cool off from the heat, front yards here embrace the Sonoran Desert landscape, with low-water plants like saguaros, chollas and palo verde trees. “One of the special things about Legend Trail is there are homes that back to the preserve. The open preserve can never be built on,” Pentecost says. The preserve is east and south of the neighborhood, and while homes to the west and north currently have desert views, the land was recently sold to the city with plans to build new single-family houses. Pueblo Revival-style homes here can have layouts between 1,600 to 1,900 square feet and range in price from $600,000 to $750,000, depending on renovations. Mediterranean-style homes are the neighborhood’s most common; layouts between 2,100 and 3,000 square feet can cost between $750,000 and $1.2 million, while those between 3,000 and 3,700 cost between $1.2 million and $1.7 million. Homes in the gated section of the neighborhood along the eastern edge are also Mediterranean style, and these can cost between $1.1 million and $2.1 million; prices vary by size, which can range from 2,800 to 4,500 square feet. All homeowners also have to pay monthly homeowners association fees that range from $90 to $160 and cover ground maintenance and access to the fitness center. Low-rise condos are also available. These rarely come on the market, and the most recent sales ranged from $490,000 to $510,000, depending on renovations, plus monthly HOA fees of around $400 that cover ground maintenance.

The public Legend Trail Golf Club

Locals here have full access to the Legend Trail Community Center, where they can work up a sweat in the gym. The center also has yoga classes, tennis and pickleball. “Pickleball’s huge here,” Edelman says. “All day long, you can hear pop, pop, pop.” The public Legend Trail Golf Club’s 18 holes wind throughout the neighborhood, and while residents have to pay to play, they can sign up for an annual pass or a loyalty card to receive discounts on tee times. The over 30,000-acre McDowell Sonoran Preserve borders the neighborhood’s east and south, with has over 225 miles of trails. “Everybody’s a hiker around here,” Edelman says. “Black Mountain and Pinnacle Peak are really popular, but they're not easy to hike.” Bartlett Lake, about 20 miles east, is a favorite getaway for fishing and boating.

Upscale dining at Mastro’s Steakhouse

The Cantina at Legend Trail is the neighborhood’s closest restaurant serving breakfast and lunch. For other restaurant options, residents will have to drive, but Edelman says, “Some of the best restaurants in the city are within five or 10 minutes of us.” She recommends Mastro’s Steakhouse, an upscale restaurant with a strict dress code. The Tonto Bar & Grill at Rancho Mañana is a more casual spot, serving Southwestern cuisine on a former dude ranch. The towns of Carefree and Cave Creek are within 6 miles and have more restaurants, plus local boutiques and shops, like Cave Creek Olive Oil Company and Watson’s Hat Shop. Big box retailers like Target and PetSmart can be found along Scottsdale Road, which also has grocery stores, including AJ’s Fine Foods and Safeway.

Loop 101 is about 13 miles south of the neighborhood, leading 25 miles to Scottsdale; residents can take Loop 101 to state Route 51 to get to downtown Phoenix, roughly 37 miles away. Legend Trail Parkway is the main road through the neighborhood, leading to Stagecoach Pass Road and Pima Road. There’s no public transportation, and while there are bike lanes and sidewalks within the neighborhood, locals rely on their cars to get around. HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center is roughly 12 miles south, and Mayo Clinic Hospital is about 15 miles southwest. Sky Ranch at Carefree, a private general aviation airport, is 3 miles northwest, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a roughly 32-mile trip.

Wildfire risk in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve

With the McDowell Sonoran Preserve so close, Legend Trail has a moderate risk of wildfire. Small fires in the preserve are common and usually quickly contained by the Scottsdale Fire Department. “Yes, there are wildfires, but they're not in our neighborhood. I’ve never had one in my backyard or been evacuated,” Edelman says. “We’ve got fire stations all around us — probably four or five stations within 15 minutes of my house.” Animals and insects can also be a problem here. “If you back up to a desert preserve, you will see nature,” Pentecost says. “One of the most important things I advise all new homeowners is they need pest control for scorpions and snakes.” Pentecost recommends having pest control treat homes here every 30 to 60 days.

Because of the arid climate, wildfires are somewhat common in the Legend Trail area.
