A collection of gated golf communities in north Scottsdale
Troon North is a collection of gated communities near some of north Scottsdale’s most popular golf courses. The neighborhood wraps around the Troon North Golf Club, a semi-private course with views of the rocky desert landscape. “Troon North Golf Club is a legendary part of the north Scottsdale golf community,” says Mike Wagner, a real estate advisor with Engle & Völkers Scottsdale who’s sold homes here for 10 years. “It’s 36 holes of some of the best desert golf that’s ever been built in Arizona.”
The master-planned community offers privacy, as well as an overall CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. “It’s surrounded by mountains, and it’s got really beautiful views,” says Connie Edelman, an associate broker with Compass who’s sold homes in the area for 30 years. “There’s some great hiking trails nearby, and it has that feel of being in the far north Scottsdale area, but you have good access to amenities.” There are several restaurants within the neighborhood, and more can be found just west on Pima Road. Nearby houses of worship include Life Church and Dream City Church.

Southwestern-style homes backing up to golf courses
The custom homes here embrace Southwestern style, with earth-toned stucco exteriors, clay-tiled or flat roofs and xeriscaped front yards featuring low-water plantings and cacti. Many back up to the green fairways of the Troon North Golf Club, and they often have backyard pools. Built from the 1990s through the 2020s, the homes range from 1,800 to 7,300 square feet, and size affects price. Homes under 3,000 square feet range from $700,000 to $1.3 million, while those between 3,000 and 4,000 square feet range from $1.7 million to $2.3 million; larger homes can cost between $2.3 million and $4.2 million. Monthly homeowners association fees ranging from $25 to $350 cover ground and street maintenance. Townhouses cost between $575,000 and $1.2 million, depending on luxury upgrades and views; monthly HOA fees for these can range from $210 to $430, covering maintenance and community amenities like a pool and gym.

Two 18-hole courses at Troon North Golf Club
The 36-hole Troon North Golf Club is the centerpiece of the community. “The way it fits in with the desert landscape and the course design have stood the test of time,” Wagner says. “When people come to Scottsdale, it’s in one of the top three courses they want to play.” Anyone can pay the daily fee to play the Troon North courses. Memberships are also available, although there’s a waitlist. Private golf courses are also nearby, including Troon Country Club and The Estancia Club, which was ranked by Golf Digest in 2023 as the No. 1 course in the state. In addition to golf, these clubs have tennis, pickleball and social events. The exclusive, invitation-only Scottsdale National Golf Club is to the east.
Troon North is also near some of the area’s most popular hiking. The 150-acre Pinnacle Peak Park has a 4-mile, out-and-back trail up Pinnacle Peak, and rock climbers can ascend the steep granite formation at the top. The Tom’s Thumb Trail, located in the more than 30,000-acre McDowell Sonoran Preserve surrounding the eastern half of the neighborhood, is a steep 4-mile trail with city views. The 34-acre George “Doc” Cavalliere Park in the south has a shaded playground and basketball courts.

Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale Fall Auction
About 10 miles north, the small town of Carefree hosts events like the annual Winter Carefree Fine Art & Wine Festival, during which over 155 artisans and artists sell their work for three days in January. Scottsdale to the south also has regular events, including Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale Fall Auction at WestWorld Scottsdale; over three days each October, car collectors and enthusiasts can check out restored classic cars and bid on their favorites.
Golf course views at Dynamite Grille
The centrally located Dynamite Grille at the Troon North Golf Club serves sandwiches and rotating dinner specials like prime rib and fried fish, with views overlooking the 18th hole. While the Four Seasons Resort in the neighborhood’s south caters mainly to tourists, locals often head to its four restaurants for an upscale meal. The locally owned Pinnacle Grille is a more casual option, serving American comfort food with views of Pinnacle Peak. Edelman says Preston’s Steakhouse and Mastro’s Steakhouse to the southwest are just two of many other excellent restaurants within 10 minutes of the neighborhood. Pima and Scottsdale roads to the west are home to the area’s shopping centers and have grocery stores like AJ’s Fine Foods and Safeway.

Local kids can start school at Desert Sun Academy, which has a B-plus grade on Niche, before attending Sonoran Trails Middle. At Cactus Shadows High, students can enroll in International Baccalaureate courses and choose from 30 clubs, including the Cactus Shadows Literary Magazine, which publishes an annual collection of student poetry, fiction and art. Sports at Cactus Shadows include golf and the nationally competitive cheer team. The middle and high schools both receive an A-minus from Niche.

Roughly 10 miles north of Loop 101
State Route 101, about 10 miles south of the neighborhood, leads 23 miles to Scottsdale. Known locally as Loop 101, the highway also heads west to state Route 51, which connects to downtown Phoenix around 35 miles away. While there’s no public transportation and sidewalks are sparse, Dynamite Boulevard does have bike lanes. Still, most residents rely on cars to get around. HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center is about 10 miles southwest, and Mayo Clinic Hospital is roughly 13 miles away. Scottsdale Airport, a general aviation airport with no commercial flights, is 13 miles southwest, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a 32-mile trip.
Wildfires in the nearby McDowell Sonoran Preserve
Troon North has a moderate risk for wildfire because it’s so close to undeveloped land to the north and east. Fires are common in the nearby McDowell Sonoran Preserve, but the Scottsdale Fire Department, which has a station in the neighborhood, quickly contains them. The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management has an app that can alert residents about nearby fires.
