Mix of nearby restaurants and neighbors
Located just nine and a half miles from downtown St. Louis, Shrewsbury is a self-governing city within St. Louis County limits. This allows residents to be a part of the greater St. Louis area by choice. “It’s great for city-dwellers like me,” says Caitlin Butler, local resident and employee at the local energy company Ameren Corporation. “It’s a happy mix with a lot of restaurants and bars nearby while still living in a quiet neighborhood.” The city is mostly laid out in a grid-pattern, with sloping driveways and small lots. The northern half of the neighborhood contains mostly single-family homes and the south has more apartments and condos. The two are divided by the Cardinal Rigali Center, the headquarters of the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis, and an assisted living facility.
Variety of homes north and subdivision to the south
There are a wide range of home styles in Shrewsbury, typical of most St. Louis neighborhoods. With a median price of $268,834, the most common styles are ranch, single-story brick, Cape Cod and new traditional homes. Shrewsbury has a few homes more than 100 years old that can sell for around $300,000 and may even sell with the original hardwood floors. Ranch homes can sell for around $450,000 while single-story brick homes can sell for between $220,000 for two-bedrooms and $300,000 for four-bedrooms. Cape Cod Revivals can be found for $170,000 to $300,000. New traditional homes in the Kenrick Manor subdivision, to the south of the city, are part of the neighborhood HOA and can sell for around $400,000 and reach $520,000.
Close to neighboring dining options
Dierbergs, a St. Louis-based grocery-chain store, sells produce, meat and fresh flowers year-round, and is located in Mackenzie Pointe Plaza. The plaza has over 20 businesses along Watson Road on the eastern edge of the neighborhood. The surrounding areas, including Webster Groves and Maplewood, are the restaurant and bar strip. “There are so many restaurants you could just hop to different ones each night,” Butler says. Nearly two miles north in Maplewood is Asador Del Sur, serving South American cuisine such as tira de asado, beef short ribs in an Uruguayan style. Perennial on Lockwood, two miles west in Webster Groves, is a small brewery that serves draft beers, classic cocktails and food from 11 a.m. to 9 or 10 p.m. depending on the day.
Four miles from 1,300-acre park
Shrewsbury is only four miles from Forest Park, a 1,300-acre park also home to the Saint Louis Zoo, Art Museum and Science Center—all of which are free to the public. “The zoo is awesome. There are over 16,000 animals and I know where every animal is,” Butler says. The zoo will also host events throughout the year, such as trivia nights or the annual fundraiser Make Tracks Through the Zoo, a 5K or 1-mile run through Forest Park and the zoo. Residents can also enjoy the Cardinal’s baseball team at Busch Stadium, about ten miles away, or a hockey game at Enterprise Center about eight and a half miles away.
Excellent schools with many clubs
“A lot of people move to Shrewsbury to attend Webster Groves schools,” says Butler. “Taxes are lower here and they still get to attend awesome schools.” Children in Shrewsbury neighborhood can begin school at Bristol Elementary School for kindergarten through fifth grade. At Bristol, students have music class every week while third through fifth graders can participate in string orchestra after school. Hixson Middle School, for sixth through eighth grade, offers students the option to take world language electives, including German, French and Spanish. At Webster Groves High School, students can participate in over 50 clubs, including rock climbing, crotchet and robotics. All three schools receive an A on Niche.
Pavilions with electricity and soccer fields
Shrewsbury is home to several parks, including the Paul C. Wehner Senior Memorial Park, commonly referred to as Wehner Park. Wehner Park has soccer fields, playgrounds and two pavilions with electricity. Just a mile north of Wehner Park is the three-acre Brinkop Park. Brinkop has playgrounds, a pavilion with electricity, a ballfield and a multi-purpose court. Pavilions are open April through October and can be reserved for $60 a day, typically starting the first Monday in March. Otherwise, the pavilions are first come, first serve.
Start of MetroLink Blue Line Missouri
The St. Louis MetroLink Blue Line starts at the Shrewsbury-Lansdowne I-44 station, and services downtown St. Louis before crossing the Mississippi River and servicing part of Illinois. Beginning at 11 p.m., the Blue Line finishes either in Illinois or at the Civic Center station just outside the Enterprise Center. Entrance to Interstate 44 is to the north of the neighborhood, connecting residents to Forest Park and downtown St. Louis.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Shrewsbury is a good central location in Saint Louis. You can easily get to downtown or even more west in Saint Louis. It is within 20 minutes of everything you could imagine in Saint Louis. I always feel safe walking around, even at night. As a younger adult it is a great central location to bars all over the Saint Louis area. I strongly suggest living in this area if you are looking for a new place to call home.

I have been living in Shrewsbury basically my whole life since I was adopted at about 2 years old. I have really enjoyed living here It is a quiet small community but it's kinda nice because you can get to know your neighbors and the people in your community better. At the end of the summer everyone periodically throughs block parties and its a fun time to hangout with everyone.
