Renner Corner is a rural neighborhood in Renner, an unincorporated community 7 miles north of Sioux Falls. It's a pastoral area with a rich history--gaining a railroad depot in 1907, the state's first ballpark in 1921 and hosting one of America's first rural electrification projects in 1923. Renner has continued to grow alongside the state-at-large in recent years, but it's maintained its rural character. Much of the area still consists of undeveloped farmland and as such, is known as a place where buyers can still find acreage properties. "People move here for the taxes," says Mapleton Township Supervisor Jordan Dvorak. "You're not paying city taxes, and you don't have all the rules of living in the city." A resident himself, Dvorak appreciates the freedom that comes with country living. "You can do anything you want with your property. You can have animals. People have livestock and hobby farms. They'll have ATVs, motorcycles, shoot guns - do whatever they like to do."

Outdoor sports bring the community together
There are no public parks in or around Renner Corner. "Most people have their own small acreage properties to do what they want to do," Dvorak says. There are, however, opportunities to try several different outdoor sports. The nearly 100-year-old Sioux Valley Cycle Club has a motorcycle racetrack where members can hang out and ride their bikes. The facility also offers motocross lessons and hosts 30 ticketed races each year. Nearby, Crooks Gun Club is a 52-acre member-owned gun club for shotgun practice only. The Cedar Ridge Equestrian Center offers lessons and boarding, and the Northern Links Golf Course is a public course with membership options and a men's league. Renner is home to South Dakota's oldest ballpark, where the Class-A amateur Renner Monarchs play home games. Post 307, an American Legion Baseball team for seventh through twelfth grade boys, also plays here. Through these programs, residents form friendships and find community, which isn't always easy in rural areas.

Rural subdivisions and acreage properties
Renner Corner's residential development has been ongoing since the 1950s. Ranch-style, split-level and bi-level homes built between the 1960s and the '80s are common, while homes built after the '90s often feature new traditional designs. Lot sizes vary dramatically here, as some homes belong to subdivisions and sit on less than an acre, while others can occupy properties as large as 20 acres. "There's a lot of acreage properties and a lot of small rural developments," Dvorak says. "They're small subdivisions, and they're not all connected. There'll be one here, and then miles of field, and then another one there." Most homes on roughly acre-sized lots cost between $300,000 and $600,000 – but prices for listings on less than an acre will fall below that range. For the most expansive properties, price points will soar beyond $600,000 and depend on the property's size and condition. Much of Renner Corner remains to be developed.
