Historic estates in Montrose Park

The historic Montrose Park neighborhood in South Orange Village attracts homebuyers with large estates that offer convenient access to downtown shopping and popular commuting options. The neighborhood, originally developed to attract wealthy businessmen from New York, is known for its big homes that feature traditional architecture. “What is now the Montrose Park Historic District has some incredibly huge homes, similar in size and scope to the estate section of Montclair,” says Mark Slade, a Realtor and founder of the Mark Slade Homes Team with Keller Williams Mid-Town Direct, and a local resident that’s been selling homes in the area for over 15 years.

Traditional-style homes from the late-1800s to mid-1900s

Montrose Park features homes with traditional-style architecture that were built between the late-1800s and mid-1900s. There are smaller colonials, as well as large Victorians and Tudor-style estates. Homes sit on modestly sized lots that have driveways and garages. Smaller three- to four-bedroom houses typically sell for $600,000 to $900,000, which larger five- to eight-bedroom properties usually go for $1 million to $2 million.

The neighborhood is bordered by Downtown South Orange, which offers restaurants and businesses within walking distance. “People here love the quaintness of downtown, mostly independent businesses,” says Slade. There’s also a Stop & Shop on Valley Street for groceries.
