A small-town feel on North Point Peninsula

Located next to Sparrows Point, Edgemere sits on the North Point Peninsula overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and Hart Miller Island. Dating back to 1899, Edgemere used to neighbor the Sparrows Point Steel Plant. The area is now fulfillment centers and distribution warehouses for brands like The Home Depot, Under Armour and Amazon. But even with industrial neighbors, Edgemere residents continue to hold onto their waterfront and outdoorsy lifestyle. “Edgemere is really unique,” explains Fred Golding, a lifelong resident and Realtor with RE/MAX First Choice. “There’s a lot of waterfront homes, a couple of waterfront parks, boating, fishing, windsurfing, waterfront bars and restaurants, and at the same time, you still get that small town feel.” The average list price for houses here is about $370,000, which is higher than further inland neighborhoods like Saint Helena and Dundalk. Downtown Baltimore is about 16 miles east via Interstate 95, and students study within the Baltimore County Public School district, graded an overall B on Niche and the No. 4 best school district in the Baltimore area. “It’s like Mayberry. Everybody knows everyone, and nobody’s kids get away with anything. I love it,” Golding says. “I’m never leaving.”

North Point State Park fishing pier and marshland trails

Locals can take North Point Road or Millers Island Road up and down the peninsula to explore marshlands, fishing piers and even Fort Howard, which dates back to the War of 1812. Fort Howard Park has a fishing pier and several walking paths. Bill’s Marine Service lets visitors rent pontoon and fishing boats for a day on the bay. Millers Island Crab Pot Supply has plenty of fishing supplies and crab traps for avid anglers. Off Hinton Avenue, pocket beaches, such as Eighth Street Park, are tucked between private homes and provide public access to the water. Old Bay Shore Road cuts through North Point State Park and ends at the North Point Visitor’s Center and Trolley Pavilion picnic spot. Visitors can sit on the nearby beach, stroll along the North Point State Park Crystal Pier, or hike the Black Marsh Trail. Boaters without private docks can choose from one of many marinas around town, such as Markel’s Boat Yard, Old Bay Marina Inc. And Young’s Boat Yard.

Waterfront homes on Lynch Point and Cuckold Point

Housing varies throughout Edgemere. Styles can range from manufactured homes at Providence Mobile Home Park to waterfront estates overlooking Pleasure Island on Cuckold Point. Lynch Point architecture can consist of traditional style two-story family residences and single-story cottages. Prices on the water can range between $350,000 and over $1 million, depending on what part of the peninsula they rest on. For example, residences on Cuckold Point, which has a better view of the bay, tend to cost more than those on Lynch Point. Off-water homes in all areas may range between $200,000 and $600,000. Homes on the water may experience some flooding during high tide or heavy rain.

Locally owned bars and restaurants on Chesapeake Bay

Edgemere residents benefit from a wide selection of locally owned restaurants and shops on the peninsula, such as Leo’s Coffee and Cream next to Edgemere Bait and Tackle. For outdoor patio sitting and indoor billiards games, Robbie’s Bar & Grill is a local favorite for gathering with friends for a beer. Down the road, Steel Point Tavern and Liquors has weekend live music performances and Thursday night karaoke. Overlooking Millers Island Lighthouse, Dock of the Bay serves its famous crab cakes right on the water. Next door is Row Boat Willie’s Dock Bar, which is tucked into the Marina and hosts live music on its outdoor beach stage. Freedom Drug Pharmacy and the local Food Lion can be found on North Point Road, and for the best snowballs in town, Edgemere’s Icy Delights is just next door.

Nearby downtown Baltimore and Johns Hopkins Hospital

After the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, commuting from Edgemere has changed. Edgemere itself is about 16 miles east of downtown Baltimore, which can be accessed via Interstate 95. It generally takes about a half hour to get into the city, though during rush hour and heavy traffic, that time can increase. Once there, travelers can access the Johns Hopkins Hospital, tour a museum, or check out the National Aquarium. To reach the Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, drivers can travel 22 miles and pay the tolls on Interstate 895.
