Historic park 3 miles from Downtown Spokane
Chief Garry Park, 3 miles from Downtown Spokane, a historic neighborhood close to the amenities of Downtown and Gonzaga University, appeals to those looking for suburban living in a city setting. “It’s a good place to purchase a first home,” says Eric Cook, a long-term Spokane resident. “Homes are situated to be improved and profitable if someone is investing.” The area is located beside the industrial district and bordered by the Spokane River. In the center of the neighborhood is its namesake, Chief Garry Park, a historic park made to honor Chief Spokan Garry, an advocate and educator of the Spokane Tribe and its chief. A monument, The Gathering Place, built using natural forms, sits within the park to remind visitors of his accomplishments.

The neighborhood has few shops or eateries, but there are several popular locations near Chief Garry Park, like Townshend Cellar, a neighborhood winery. The cellar positions the tasting room is right in the middle of the winery, so visitors may taste while watching the winemaking process. Blissful Blends serves colorful blended energy and espresso drinks paired with pastries and breakfast items for a morning pick-me-up. Popular options for casual dining are Zips, a local chain known for its burgers and shakes, or Burrito House, an unassuming Mexican restaurant that's a go-to for taco platters. Across the Spokane River is Safeway and Costco is nearby on Sprague Avenue.
Riverfront Park events and Spokane fairgrounds
Residents can easily access the frequent events in Downtown Spokane, such as the annual Summer Carnival at Riverfront Park, which culminates in Fourth of July fireworks and a performance by the Spokane Symphony. Those looking to catch a baseball game can access the nearby Avista Stadium. The Spokane County Fair Grounds and Expo Center hosts various events throughout the year, from the classic Spokane County Interstate Fair to dog shows. There are six houses of worship in and around the area featuring a variety of faiths, including the Islamic Center of Spokane, Baha’i Faith, the Spokane Buddhist Temple and the Solid Rock Christian Center, among others.
Spokane Community College
Children attend Stevens Elementary School, receiving a C-plus from Niche, for prekindergarten to sixth grade. Students advance to North Central High School, receiving an A, for seventh through twelfth grade. Students are supported through the school's homework center, offering help with challenging assignments or classes. The school also has a Career and Technical Education department, offering students the chance to learn subjects like engineering, marketing and video production. Students may attend several public alternative schools in the area, such as Bryant Center, receiving a B-minus, which serves grades pre-K through twelfth grade. Spokane Community College, receiving a B-minus, is located within the Chief Garry Park community for students wishing to continue their education or train in a specialty career.
Walking paths and water landings
The community is anchored by Chief Garry Park, featuring a splash pad, athletic fields and a large lawn with shaded areas. Locals walk or jog along the Community College River Walk Trail or head across the river to bike along the Centennial Trail, which stretches to the Idaho border. The area of the Spokane River bordering the region is between two damns. “This makes the river barely fluctuate,” says Cook. “And you don’t have to worry about flooding.” The Gonzaga University rowing team will use the area for practices, and the nearby municipal airfield will use it for water landings.
Transit center on college campus
The region is bordered by Route 290 and near I-90. Chief Garry Park is 10 miles from the Spokane International Airport and next door to Parkwater Aviation, a pilot training center. “It’s still pretty quiet because there are not many houses next to it,” says Cook. Bus stops line major roadways and there is a transit center on the Spokane Community College campus.
