Get lost in nature at Lake Wilderness, a community of waterfront log cabins and new construction among remote forests and Civil War sites. Enveloped in Virginian woodlands, you can feel the centuries of history from well-preserved artifacts and battlefields to an array of newer homes built in the 21st century.

Southwest of the nation’s capital, Lake Wilderness has a heavily wooded terrain of winding residential streets for a private and quiet atmosphere. “It’s an older community that’s good for first-time home buyers,” says Alan Campbell, Realtor with EXP Realty and 25 years of experience. Single-family houses surround a trio of lakes, where you can purchase a log cabin on an acre of land for a tranquil sanctuary next to the water. With its own dock for daily swims and kayak rides, a log cabin home may cost around $625,000. A new construction bi-level may cost around $440,000 for move-in ready conditions and half an acre of yardage. For a more affordable option, you can get a ranch-style houses from the 1970s for around $350,000. All in all, the area has agreeable price points. “They have low HOA dues with great amenities like a clubhouse, a beach and a playground. It’s good for families on a budget,” Campbell says.

Students in Lake Wilderness go to the Spotsylvania County Public School District, which earns a B grade according to Niche and has a student-teacher ratio of 16-to-1. Schools include Brock Road Elementary School, Ni River Middle School and Riverbend High School. On Niche, the elementary school earns a B grade, the middle school a B-plus and the high school an A-minus. The course pathways include unique programs for Architecture and Construction Arts, Audio/Video Tech and Business Management.

Spend quality time in the fresh air of rural Virginia in a few of the area’s recreation spaces. At the playground by Keaton Lake, bring kids somewhere they can burn off their energy, then take a canoe or go swimming in the lake. Fawn Lake Marina provides a boat launch, tubing and fishing destination. At Fawn Lake Country Club, appreciate the well-groomed greens of 18 holes on an Arnold Palmer Signature golf course.

On the edge of the community, you can find a small retail hub with gas stations and a couple of restaurants. Head to Sheetz for convenience store items and snacks. Grab an easy meal at McDonald’s or sit down at Two Brothers, a relaxed Italian American joint, for family dinners.

Being entrenched in the Battle of Wilderness during the Civil War, Lake Wilderness features historic sites. At Ellwood Manor, tour a former Civil War hospital and headquarters, then walk to the cemetery where Stonewall Jackson's arm is allegedly buried. You can also visit Vermont Monument to honor the casualties of the Vermont Brigade and take a walk through a woodsy trail. At the General Alexander Hays Mortuary Monument, see where the leader died during the Battle of Wilderness.

About 66 miles from Washington, D.C., residents of Lake Wilderness can commute to the nation’s capital via Interstate 95 North. For weekend trips in the nation’s capital, visit the Smithsonian museums or the Tidal Basin. In Lake Wilderness, enjoy a log cabin or newer home among a lakeside forest setting with historic landmarks.
