Suburban neighborhood adorned by oak trees
Oak Grove is a modest Springfield neighborhood of suburban streetscapes surrounded by busier thoroughfares. The central and east side of Oak Grove consists of mostly older and established neighborhoods with a lot of the usual trappings and a clue to Oak Grove's origin story. "It's known mostly for its oak trees, where the name comes from," said Rob Evans, a real estate agent with Murney Associates, who services the neighborhood.
While subdivisions have developed west of the railroad that runs through the neighborhood, it's a 20-foot long macaroni noodle in front of the Kraft Heinz Co. manufacturing plant that serves as the neighborhood's iconic landmark. It's motto, "You know you love it" not only pertains to the tasty side dish, but also residents' take on their surroundings.
Lena Guminski, president of the Oak Grove Neighborhood Association, says her favorite thing about Oak Grove is living by the park. "I get to hear all the people out there laughing," says Guminski. "There's the peacefulness of that and seeing people out jogging and walking their dogs."
She's referring to Oak Grove Park, easily reachable on foot for many, including those whose back yards adjoin the space. The park has a large field with mature trees that serve as obstacles for the nine-hole disc golf course. There's also a horseshoe pit, charcoal grills and a playground, making it a popular spot to gather for special occasions. The Oak Grove Community Center is located at the park as well, featuring an indoor basketball gym, a climbing wall and ping pong tables for the public to enjoy.
The Oak Grove Neighborhood Association puts on events at Oak Grove Park every year. Guminski says they do an ice cream social that has been growing over the years. The community also gathers for an annual potluck at the beginning of fall, which Guminski says always has the largest turnout.
With proximity to US 65, Oak Grove residents can quickly head north or south.

Homes from the mid-1900s to early 2000s
The residential side of Oak Grove is made up of straight streets lined with single-family homes on leafy quarter-acre lots. Most homes were built in the mid-1900s, with three-bedroom ranch styles being the most common. Some bungalows, Dutch Colonial Revivals and Craftsman-style homes are mixed in too. These homes typically range from $200,000 to $275,000. There are a few newer subdivisions developed after 2000, featuring neo-eclectic houses, which sell for around $300,000 to $450,000. While most homes are situated in quiet areas, there are some right next to the train track and others just across from U.S. Route 65, which can be noisy. There is a wall, however, to avoid the site of the busy highway.
