About Temple Hills, MD

Suburban living in Temple Hills

Tucked away among the winding, tree-lined roads of D.C.'s suburbs is the active community of Temple Hills. Named after Dr. Edward Temple, who settled in the area in the 19th century, Temple Hills has become an attractive area for those in search of a single-family home. "It’s one of the affordable Maryland cities that puts you in close proximity to the D.C. area," says local Realtor Keith Jackson of KJAX Group.

A competitive housing market

Prices for homes in Temple Hills vary greatly. Small, brick ranch homes can price around $400,000 while modern, multistory colonials with large, sprawling yards may reach up to $600,000. On average, family homes price between $300,000 and $500,000 while condominiums may range between $50,000 and upwards of $200,000. The Temple Hills housing market is very competitive with an average time on market of just a few weeks. "With such a limited number of available properties, it typically doesn't take long for homes to be claimed," Jackson says.

Picking up groceries at the Rosecroft Shopping Center

For groceries, take a trip to Temple Hills' southside and visit Jumbo Food at Rosecroft Shopping Center. The busy supermarket is a staple for locals thanks to its fresh produce and meats. The shopping center includes a Dollar General, a laundromat and a barber shop. Just west of the community is the local Global Foods with its assortment of international brands and home essentials. While on Branch Avenue, The Shops at Iverson offers boutiques, food shops and other retail stores. For a quick meal, fast food chains are easily accessible from Brinkley Road. You can also drive north on Temple Hill Road and visit the local Country Style Chicken & Waffles, whose robust breakfast entrees like the "Good Morning Platter" will leave you salivating for days.

Hulu hooping classes at the Temple Hills Community Center

To spend time outdoors, head southside and take a brisk walk on the Henson Creek Park trail. Teeming with greenery and wildlife, the paved, 5-mile path serves as a picturesque escape from the day-to-day hustle and bustle of the D.C. outskirts. You may even spot a painted turtle or two during your walk along the creek. Invite some friends and practice your fastball on one of the park's two baseball fields or play a game of chess at one of the dedicated chess benches stationed just next to the fields. The Temple Hills Community Center is another popular gathering place for residents. With a tennis court and a playground, the community center is the central hub for locals to socialize and stay active. You can even attend classes like basketball clinics, hula hooping instructionals and fitness boot camps here.
